Good undergraduate nursing major colleges/Universities for average B student!?

hello everyone,
im currently a sophomore in hs and looking forward to become a nurse (RN).

i started college researching a few months ago and im very serious about it..

however i looked at most of threads in this forums about nursing, and realized most of good nursing schools look pretty tough to get in - it almost feels like there are no colleges open for average B to A- students to go.

is there any college that offers great- but not the greatest- nursing program,
not too much or even no party going on at all(i dont like to drink),
and not too urban?
....

or am i asking too much?

my stats:

freshman gpa: 3.0 weighted

sopho. gpa: 3.75 ~ 4.0 so far.. but i didnt take the final exam yet

the first PSAT i took : 137
but i think i definitely can pull it up to 1800 in my real SAT :)

You sound quite similar to me. I had a 2.97uw GPA and a 23 composite on the ACT.

I applied to:

Drexel University
Le Moyne College
Temple University
D’Youville College
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Brockport
SUNY Binghamton (as a reach)
Also some others, but the nursing programs at those schools aren’t nearly as strong.

I was accepted to most of these schools; the only ones that I wasn’t were Binghamton (straight up rejected) and Buffalo (wait listed).

Drexel, Le Moyne and D’Youville definitely have the best nursing programs. They’re all direct entry meaning once you’re admitted into the school, you are admitted into the nursing program, although you do have to complete the prereqs to move into the curriculum, all have great clinical opportunities starting in the 2nd year, and all have high (85% or above). NCLEX-RN pass rates.

Out of the three I just listed above, you would probably like Le Moyne the best. It’s in a suburb of Syracuse, doesn’t have much partying on campus (but there is off campus, especially at SU), and is just a really nice environment. That’s where I’m headed come August :)

One question though:

How does your school do GPA? Is it unweighted, weighted, year by year, cumulative…That makes a big difference.

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH! I’m a B student, I got into the school for engineering, a tough major to get into at all schools and Pitt has a top 10 nursing program

:DDD
thank you SingDanceRunLife and pierre0913!!
your information is verryyyy helpful :D

i looked up some of colleges you guys told me,
and all of them look fantastic. im definitely interested in Drexel University, Le Moyne College,
D’Youville College and U of pittsburgh.

however they are bit expensive tho …

how much financial aid they give to students generally?
I live only with my mom, and she doesnt earn that much.

i hope the colleges are all generous of giving out some $$s :p

oh and singdancerunlife, our highschool’s grading system is a bit weird, but mostly it’s weighted. we count all the +s and -s.

Blackpanther (boy a name that brings back memeroies) – what state are you and/or your parents resident in?

kayf:

i currently live in NJ for 3 years now
and of course, with my mom too. she goes to medical college and she will be graduating in 2 years.

university of scranton…expensive sticker price but apparently give very good aid packages.

I can’t speak to Pittsburgh (I looked at it a little, but didn’t apply as it’s fairly far away and I already had schools on my list that I preferred)…But Drexel is insanely expensive. I got in, but I didn’t get any money from them, so I don’t know how hard it is to get scholarships or anything, and I didn’t do the FAFSA.

Le Moyne is (without money) probably around $36,000/year…BUT, they are very generous with merit aid. I got $10,000/year…And it sounds like you have better grades and scores than me, so you would probably get more, I’m guessing like $15,000 or so.

D’Youville has a total that’s around $30,000 without money…But they have “instant scholarships” which means that if you get accepted and meet the criteria, then you get the scholarships. I got 25% off room and board and 50% off tuition for all 4 years, and to reiterate, my GPA was a 2.97 and my ACT was a 23…So you could easily get that if not a higher scholarship (50% off both room and board).

As to need-based FA, I have no idea, but I’m sure that the cost won’t be nearly as much as the sticker price.

In PA, in addition to Scranton, you could check out Wilkes, Misericordia, and Marywood. Those four schools are all within 1/2 hour of each other. Misericordia is a small school that caters to a lot of the health professions (OT, PT, Medical Imaging, Nursing). It is not urban - it is a lovely campus in a residential area with a small town just down the road. They offer several different scholarships for nursing majors. Not sure how they do on need based money, but you could always inquire. Right now, your stats seem low for much merit money at Scranton. If your gpa rises and your SATs improve over your PSATs, you will have more of a shot.

Add York College of PA to your list. (It’s my alma mater.) Nursing is a very popular major there, and there is a state-of-the-art hospital across the street from the main campus.

wow!
thank you for all those great informations - i didnt expect that much from this post, but the info i got from here are really helpful.

hmmm… yes, i DO need to improve my grades and of course, SAT too.
I tried to take ACT by going over one of the ACT guides they sell in bookstores,
but it was insane. i thought ACT was harder than SAT… the time limits make me go crazy!

but, anyway, i will add all the colleges you guys told me- and look them up.

im very excited to read the posts on here.
please feel free to suggest more colleges for meee :)

nursing school, number of nursing bachelors degrees last year, SAT 25th percentile, SAT 75th percentile

SATs are overall, not just nursing

top 100

I just checked Columbia’s website. Pretty sure their program is for graduate degrees only, not undergrad.

They do have a combined BS/MS program: “The Combined BS/MS (ETP) program is an accelerated combined-degree (BS/MS) program for non-nursing college graduates.”

I don’t think that’s what the OP is looking for.

I also checked Duke’s website. Their Nursing BS degree is an accelerated program for college graduates. Also not what the OP is looking for.

What I wrote about Duke and Columbia still stands. The OP does not have a college degree, and is not looking for a combined BS/MS program.

This may apply to other schools on pierre’s list; the OP should check the school websites to see if they offer a BSN to students who don’t already have a BS in another subject.

ETA: Yale would be included with Duke and Columbia. There are probably others.
