Good universities in the South?

I'd like to hear the name of some good ones, as I am currently freezing my butt off in Ohio.

I know some of the good publics are North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, UVA(though I don't really consider VA South, I used to live there in the DC area, maybe thats why, but whatever)

Some good privates I know of are Vanderbilt, Emory, Duke, Tulane...Miami up and coming

I plan on applying 'Bama, LSU and South Carolina due to generous and fairly attainable merit scholarships, but I want to know some other good schools.

I'd like a somewhat big school, but I know about most of those, so tell a Yankee about some schools below the Mason-Dixon line.

Thanks

Not that I would attend any ( due to lack of seasons... like snow) but University of Virginia, Duke University, University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, University of Texas-Austin ( don't know if you would consider it more south or west), University of Georgia, Clemson University, and the list goes on.

Wow surprise you wouldn't want to attend Ohio State University- Columbus, I think it's a very good school. It wouldn't be my top choice school, but certianly would consider it if rejected by the top 2 schools in Michigan.

Universality of Florida Gators
Wake Forest University Demon Deacons
Rice University Owls

ehh, tOSU is not my cup of tea. I wouldn't mind going to a school with the student population at 50k, but I'd know a ton of people at tOSU, I don't really want to live in Ohio when I grow up, I want to be in the military so the prestige of the college doesn't have to matter to me, but it does, lol.

I'd rather go to UM than tOSU, better school, less ***hats.

If you want to be in the military consider

The Citadel College Bulldogs
Virgina Military Institute Cadets

Both are in the south

I would stay away from U of Florida. Unless you like swamps and rednecks.

That's completely unecessary.

Coolbrezze- one of the things really great about Nashville is the four seasons. No, there isn't a lot of snow, but there is some. The springs and falls are incredible. I would take a look at Vanderbilt.

That's an amazingly uninformed comment. The University of Florida is a top notch public university.

Yeah I know states like Tennessee and Virginia sometimes tend to get some snow, but a lot of the times it's just not enough. Also Vanderbilt University is too small for me.

Don't know how this post got placed ahead of yours.

I'm applying to the Coast Guard Academy and I'm going to try to get a NROTC scholarship, that would help in going to a expensive school. But I'm not sure if I'd want a military school that is not an academy.

I think you have a solid list of schools right here if you are not interested in applying to non academies

look at these schools

Vanderbilt University Commodores
Wake Forest University Demon Deacons
Emory University Eagles
Rice University Owls
Duke University Blue Devils
University of North Carolina Tar Heels
University of Texas Longhorns
University of Florida Gators
University of Virgina Cavilers

Georgia Tech is another great southern school.

Yeah, GA Tech is definitely up there along with all the other schools mentioned.

That is if he wants to be an engineer.

Or some other field in the sciences or mathematics. But he wants to be a marine. So I would not consider Georgia Tech.

what do you specifically want to study in college?

I'm thinking Political Science/ International Relations. Might try to minor, or maybe even major in something in business related.

In fact, Georgia Tech does have an International Relations program, in addition to other "liberal arts" offerings.

Washington and Lee University, James Madison University, College of William and Mary (the nation's oldest and Jefferson's alma mater), Furman University, Davidson College, Sewanee-The University of the South, Elon University, University of Miami, Rhodes College, Wofford College.
