I'm a junior in high school, and I live in Oregon, but I grew up in the south and I've always had a dream of going to college in the south. Like Alabama, or Louisiana, or Texas, somewhere like that. I am going to be a doctor, but I'm just looking at a college for the first four years for now. I'm smart, but I'm not super smart. My GPA will probably be between 3.0 - 3.6 because I really screwed up my freshman year, and that's the highest it can be. But I'm determined and I know I can do something with my life. So if you have any suggestions of good pre med programs, or any good school at all, in the south, that isn't too expensive, let me know! Thank you!

UNC Chapel Hill sounds good for you. What are your SAT/ACT scores?

Wake Forest, Tulane, Davidson, University of Alabama might be ones to consider.

Emory, Vanderbilt, Rice are good schools in the south but they would be reaches.

My SAT score was in the 1990-2100 range, and my ACT score was about 28-30.

and do you think it would be better if i went to a state school, got my degree, and then went to another out of state school for med school, instead of going out of state both times, and having it be more expensive?

UNC-CH would be a reach, just like Emory, Vandy and Rice. also consider Tulane, U. Miami (not really southern I guess though), College of Charleston, U Alabama would probably be a safety, as could U. South Carolina. Also, Elon, Wake, UNC- Asheville

University of Florida

3.0 - 3.6GPA / UNC Chapel Hill OOS , Davidson. Sorry. No Never. I think people are mostly giving you lists of schools they like in the south.

Reaches – Davidson, Wake Forest, Tulane

Matches – Furman, Sewanee, Rhodes, Trinity U, Elon

Safe matches – Wofford, Birmingham-Southern

Safeties – Samford, Hendrix, Guilford

You should explore some publics in your state for cheap alternatives. U Oregon and Oregon State are the obvious options.

Lewis & Clark, U Puget Sound, Whitman, U Portland, and Willamette would also be worth a look.

In my opinion, if you are seriously considering medicine, go to a state school for undergrad unless you get serious money from a private institution. With your test scores, school like Tulane ect. are matches or low reaches at worst, but you aren’t going to get much if any scholarship money. Your best option is really to go public.

You can always go into an SEC’s honor program/college if you’d like more ‘prestige.’ It’s going to be much more affordable to go to an Auburn or Georgia than an Emory or Rice. Medical schools care much more about your test scores, your GPA, and your volunteer ect. than where you went to school. Despite the biases of some outside the south and even some on CC, the South has great public universities. Best of Luck!

I’m partial to a few in the South: Auburn, U of Florida, U of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss (University of Mississippi), University of Virginia. There are also smaller souther schools where you might get more money like Millsaps, Samford, ect. In Texas, try UT-Austin, Texas A&M, SMU, Trinity. I realize that all of the schools that I’ve suggested are not public, but the private ones are ones at which you have the best shot at merit money.
