Goodall-Wooten Private Dorm - How is it?

HI everyone, has anyone ever stayed at the Goodall-Wooten Dorm ... Could you supply a list of pros and cons for this dorm? It looks really old in the photo, but its really near campus, so I'm considering it as a possible housing choice. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

Well it’s substance free, so if you like to party then it’s probably a no go.

Also there is no food service, so you’d be almost entirely reliant on Bevo Bucks and cheap fast food, or else Ramen and Easy Mac in your microwave.

If you want to stay off campus, go with the Castilian, Dobie, or University Towers. All are very nice, have cafeterias, and are within walking distance to campus (as close as Goodal-Wooten).

I don’t know anyone who has lived in Goodal Wooten so I can’t really give any personal feedback there.

We just got something in the mail from the Castilian, it looked pretty nice.

theloneranger:

are there any dorms that are not substance free?

Hey theloneranger,

Thanks for your reply!

I don’t mind the dorms being substance free, but I am concerned about is the age of the building. From what I see in the photos, it looks really old and run-down.

Unfortunately though, I did check out the Castilian, Dobie, and University Towers, but they did not have the kind of room I want.

Thanks any way for your input!

Most private dorms are not substance free as far as I know. Goodall Woten may be the only one.

I don’t know about the official status of dorms on campus. Most of the population is underage so that’s “officially” not accepted, but from everything I’ve heard if you aren’t outside on campus with liquor you won’t get in trouble, and unless the RA is unfriendly I’ve heard it’s fine inside. Illegal drugs are a different matter, but then pot is more widely used in Austin than in most other cities so the APD also don’t really care. Towers in particular has a reputation as a party dorm, and some people have told me that Dobie is a party dorm (others have said it’s really boring). I’ve also heard room parties in Jester are quite common.

I’ve heard mixed reviews of the Castilian. Some people love it (and I’ve heard the food is about the best you can find in a dorm kitchen anywhere) but I’ve read that the management isn’t too good and if you have a problem it will rarely be solved.

AustinCE–I can’t tell your gender, but if you’re female you might want to look in to Hardin House or Scotish Rite Dorm (SRD), which are both very nice all-girls dorms. I really don’t know anyone who has lived in Goodall Wooten, so I don’t know about the state of the buildings, how they cope without food service, how they meet people, or have fun. Sorry I can’t be of much help.

You might want to look in to one of the cooperative houses, where for a few hours of work a week you can get a fairly low price for room and board. However, the residents tend to put the “weird” into “Keep Austin Weird,” so be warned.

someone died there…

I’d beware.

Hi theloneranger,

Thanks once again for your input. Yeah, I’ve heard of the party reputation at Jester as well as at the Towers, and I also read the thread about the various problems at the Castillian. I’m male by the way, so I can’t get into the female dorms.

So now it boils down to either the Goodall Woten or some other form of housing.

And the hookemhorns, what do you mean by beware, someone died there? Are you referring to the Goodall Wotten? What are the circumstances of the
death? Also, do you happen to know the age of the building?

Thanks everyone for your inputs!

No, the death was at Towers.

A freshman SAE pledge got completely trashed, then went out to his balcony at Towers and fell off.

This didn’t happen at GW.

But just so you know, AustinCE, many of the on-campus dorms allow substances but don’t really have a major problem. I’d look at Duren, which is far away from the majority of freshmen and has a “quiet” reputation, as well as Simkins, which is all guys and also is known for being more quiet and laid back.

Well actually there WAS a death at Goodall Wooten this year. It was very similar to the death at Towers–a student fell off a fifth-floor balcony and died.

I’m not sure if that one was alcohol related or not.

Yep. The death happened a few months ago at the Godall Wooten. Think it was a computer science major/ 4th floor. I live in Dobie and saw the ambulances from my window at like 5 AM because it was really loud.

He was a junior computer science major from Houston. Tox reports have not been released so don’t know if alchohol or other substance was involved.

My son says that another kid fell off a balcony at Towers this year but wasn’t killed, broke some bones, was LUCKY as heck.

I wonder how long it will be before that they screen in balconies at the dorms! I’ve told my son to stay off them! YIKES!!!

Here’s the article about the death.

anything like this happen on the honors dorms?

don’t live at the Goodall Wooten if you’re a freshman.
Go to Jester or an honors dorm…seriously, most of your friends will probably live there, and it’s so much easier and fun to go home with the crowd instead of just going in the opposite direction on your own.

personally, i think ALL the dorms are all run-down…but no one expects luxury living at college unless you have the cash $.$

If you’re going to go on campus, go Duren or San Jac and nothing else.

But off-campus dorms are where it’s at and it isn’t even a close comparing anything on campus. Best off campus are Towers, Hardin House, and Scottish Rite.

Hardin, Scottish Rite, and Towers cater to a heavy “rush” and “greek” pop.

If you’re not interested in being a part of that, don’t live in these dorms. Different people than what you will find in other dorm rooms around campus.

If you want a more homogenous experience (more of a mix between greek/non greek) then I would recommend Dobie or the Castillian. I live in Dobie. There’s still greek pledges but it’s not infested.

heterogenous - mixed, homogenous - all alike.

lol on using “infested”

I agree about a “heavy” greek population, but not filled 100% with greeks. One of my son’s best friends is not greek - instead he’s on the frisbee golf team (it’s always good to find a “group” at UT, makes the atmosphere smaller) - lives happily in Towers.

Only bad thing I’ve heard about Castillian is that the facilities sometimes don’t work, like the washing machines/dryers or the elevators, but it is in a great location. Dobie kind of seems ant hillish to me, but thats JMO.

Castillian is a **** hole.

The Goodall Wooten is old and it shows. When I visited the Goodall Wooten I got the feel that it was a dorm for people who just need a place to live and aren’t concerned about anything else except the proximity to campus. I live in Jester and it’s more then I expected, I like it but I’ll be moving off campus my sophomore year.

Woops, sorry about the homogenous thing. Didn’t realize I did that. I assure you I know the difference.

Infested is correct. As a parent, I don’t understand how you could possibly understand from your son’s best friends point of view. The Towers is among the worst. A guy threw a beer bottle at my while he was smoking a blunt on his balcony. Pretty seedy dorm if you ask me.
