Goodbye, my dream

I found out that I'm being rejected on Fiday. Here's my stats, hopefully you guys can help me to find out my weaknesses.

Current University: Univ of Iowa
Major: Accounting and management information system, Tippie College of Business
GPA: 3.95 (Got a B and B+ in general education, all others are As.)
Hours earned:59
Major applied for: First choice: McCombs, Second choice:COLA Economics
Essays submitted: submitted all three
Letter of recommendation: 2 from instructors who are very familiar with me, but they are not very well-known I guess.
Extracurriculum: work experience (business assistant,university tutor,sale assistant in the University Bookstore.)
Volunteer: not much
Status: International

I'm really frustrated because I thought I had a good shot. I'm more confused than sad actually, however, I have to accept this result. I want to know the possible reason for being rejected so that I can improve and prepare myself better for Grad school. I'll apply UT again!

My big guess is about my GPA. My school has a 4.33 system, however, NOT all the courses offer A+, only some do. I haven't gave UT any official explanation about this. They must assume that all the courses would offer A+. I have 2 semesters GPA which are above 4. But one summer and semester 3.89. So I end up with 3.95. In fall 2009,I got 3 A and 2 A+, which is almost amazing in my school considering into account the difficulty of the courses here.

I'm willing to listen to anyone's suggestion.

Thanks!

Did you complete all the indicator courses? ( http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/Udean/admissions/internal.asp</a> / link is for internal transfers but the indicator courses are the same either way )

btw did you apply to any other business schools? im sure a 3.9 can get you in somewhere.

I finished all the indicator courses. Finished Calc 1 in high school, Calc 2—A+, Macroecon–A+,microecon—A-
I didn’t apply for other schools. That’s too bad :(

@VickyloveCD have you considered appealing??? I can’t understand why you were rejected.

i guess their were ALOT of applicants with 3.9s, you should call and consider the appeal route.

3.95/4.33 = 3.64/4?

Other than that your stats looked good. 4.33 grading scale is kinda weird though

@msolo45, I don’t know whether appealing will change something.
But thank you for your suggestion. I want to have a try, even if the chance is rare.

@AlexlinFTW That’s what I thought about too. 4.33 grading scale sucks. I pretty much got all A+ if the course instructor offered one. I don’t know how should I explain this to admissions office or if they want to hear about this.

I’m assuming that you are a transfer student considering that you have posted that you’ve already earned 59 hours. McCombs is not huge on accepting transfer students. Especially with more hours. Another factor is that you are not a resident of the state of Texas. Currently the University is mandated to accept more students than it can handle through the state’s top 10% rule (now 7.5% rule for UT Austin). Transfer applications are highly competitive for McCombs. A huge chunk of high school students who applied to UT are very bright and given a chance at entering the University via the CAP program. This is where the applicants are denied freshman admission but are told to go to a UT satelite school in another city with a transfer track into UT Austin. This adds further pressure on the University to limit transfer applicants.

Sorry to hear that you didn’t get in. Your numbers look good, but unfortunately you applied to one of the hardest colleges to transfer into in the University. There are extremely bright kids in high school who got rejected at McCombs and get accepted at schools that are considered better academically than UT Austin, such as Duke, Rice and Vanderbilt. The top 10% rule has really screwed the University up.

If you are interested in accounting, then just apply to the MPA program. My ex-girlfriend got into the MPA program from a horrible public university. You have to take the GMAT though.

Good Luck.

The college application process is pretty crazy. I know quite a few people who were accepted into “most selective” schools while being declined by “selective” schools. Chances are there is a better fit with a school who seems to appreciate your application more than one that declined you. I’ve also heard that some colleges don’t accept students who they feel will most likely choose another offer – this helps them look good statistically and also saves time if they guess correctly.

@BK

dont you mean top 8%

Pierrechn,

I could be wrong. I know for sure that they are now able to limit the automatic admission to 75% of the total fresman incoming class.

@BK

o yea its now top 8%

@Vicky

you didnt get in Liberal Arts?

It may not be exactly the top 8% of a class - it depends on what it takes to get to the 75% level. They will have X spaces to fill, so they’ll start at the top of the class and work their way down until they hit that number.

@pieerechn

No.I’m not even admitted to my second choice. That’s why I’m more confused. I know McCombs is so selective. But COLA doesn’t want me too. I guess something wrong with myself.

@BK696969, Thank you so much!

I understand how competitive it is. I just wish I could be offered a chance to go to COLA and then transfer internally. However, I even didn’t get to COLA.
The reason that I have 59 hours earned is because I took 18 hours every single semester (which is the most hours we can take) because I feel I can handle it well.

Thank you for your encouraging words again. I’ll apply for the grad school again.

thats awesome although I think maybe your essays were weak. The essays are super important. So probably thats why…

the fact that you have 59 hours may have kept you out of COLA/Mccombs

It seem very odd that you were turned down. You seem like a great candidate. I would definitely contact them and find out what happened.

contact them!!
what’s the worst they can say…no…which they’ve already done.
