Goodnight scholarship

Sorry if this on here already…I’m a rookie…Trying to guess if son will be asked to compete for Goodnight…USC has been great so far with offer but we live in NC and his mom would love for him to stay a little closer.

When would we hear and does his bio fit well?

Middle class white kid inside what is needed income wise

GPA 3.8/4.85
SAT 1480
Early college so no rank
6 AP’s " only " due to 2 years of college classes…very tough college classes heavy in science and math
Essay fine I guess
Very avg EC’s…at least compared to some of the remarkable kids you read about on here.

Goodnight scholars doesn’t have an average stats page. If you’re invited, you should hear in early January. I’d think they already sent the invitations by now since It’s the 10th.

Requirements:
-application in by November 1
-$30k-99k income
-STEM major
-show high academic and extracurricular achievement

The average EC may have hurt him.

Thanks for the input

For anyone interested this was on their facebook page

invitations to the Goodnight Scholars Program will be sent out by the end of the work day this Friday, January 16th. Feel free to email us at goodnightscholarship@ncsu.edu if you have any additional questions!

Did anybody get invited? Its the day after invitations were expected! If so, please reply to this post!

wondering the same…no twitter response…nothingat all … seems weird

I was hoping to get invited… @chuck222‌ because I fit all the criteria and have well above average stats, but I guess we’ll see!!!

My daughter was invited to apply.

Well this sucks… with 5 kids in my house and a single parent who doesn’t make a ton of money, the money and the opportunity to join this community would’ve been very helpful :frowning: . But this won’t deter me from pursuing my dreams! Thanks for letting me know though! What matters is gaining my education and hopefully helping others gain an education, and nothing will stop me.
@nerdymathmama‌ @chuck222‌ @Athana‌

Congrats…Thought based on his stats my S was a shoe in for the first 600…but I have seen some really good friends of his deferred just getting in…I think with the emphasis on STEM careers has made NC state get way more competitive…

@wchristen89‌ are you an in state resident? NCSU tuition doesn’t seem bad.

If your family’s EFC is really low, I think you could get a lot of federal aid. I think enough to cover most of the cost without loans.

@chuck222‌ it was on more than stats. It was on how much candidates impacted their community

First off I would not wish on anyone the responsibility to comb through such great kids…it’s a thankless job…I did hear that there has been a flood of complaints…they just got a new director last week…The regular application does not really give the students much of a chance to explain " impact " on the community in a real sufficient way. It seems unrealistic to me for a staff of few people could possibly pick through the thousands of accepted applicants to come up with 600 candidates in just a couple of weeks without relying on raw data primarily. Think about the days and man power hours it would take to read each resume’ etc. and decide based on impact on the community.

I suspect that there is a formula based on certain quotas…for example I doubt they would select 50 kids from Wake County when there are 100 counties in the state…I think that is a fair enough approach but none of those type of criteria are printed…which probably leads to overwhelming complaints.

Again I don’t want to whine too much…it’s a tough/impossible gig…and my S was not really a great candidate in the end to get the award…JMHO.

@chuck222‌ I’m sure they do cross out a lot of students by numbers. Like no community service listed, leadership, or geographic regions. Once they whittle the stack by numbers alone, they probably read the supplemental essays in the application.

They could do a profile on their scholars and give a more concrete date than sometime in January.

NCSU application could be so much easier. Maybe it’s not that bad for regular students but NCSU’s application was the most painfully long application (of all I have attempted). Having to manually input in every single class I’ve taken. I’m pretty sure my early college folks understand. Why can’t I send my transcripts through CFNC and be done like every other NC college?
What was the point of supplemental questions? All I know is a vague “scholarships” reason. And they had a max of 500 characters. Basically merit aid for who is the most efficient twitter user.
The residency forms!! I’m pretty sure it constitutes as its own application for how long that sucker was. I’m pretty sure they asked about events that occurred before I was born.

@Athana‌ @chuck222‌ Turns out I got invited after all! I’m so happy and proud of myself that I stayed positive and optimistic after what I thought was a failure!

Wait… I just realized something… if I was invited to apply, does this mean I was accepted to the university? I applied for the November 1st deadline, and haven’t been accepted to the university yet as far as I’m concerned? I should be receiving my acceptance/deferral/denial this Friday?

Getting invited is not the be all end all- our son was invited to apply but deferred for admission! So getting an invite apparently doesn’t mean that much!

Just realized that sounded a little bitter- I don’t mean it that way, but it is very ironic to be deferred but invited to apply for a very prestigious scholarship

.

You probably have a right to be a little bitter…My son got an invite a week late…but had been accepted already…my gut tells me that there was some kind of issue when they sent out the initial emails…JMHO

Best wishes for all applicants!
