I am currently a student at syracuse university taking a break from school and looking to attend a community college near me. During my 1.5 years at cuse, I was seriously depressed. I was basically catatonic and suicidal, and did not attend any classes, obviously causing me to fail most of my classes. I ended up with a .7 gpa. Yes .7
I sought out help and therapy during my time at syracuse and time home. I have high hopes and dreams but was not able to unlock my full potential at all. I plan to attend a community college and plan to transfer back to a 4 year university as soon as possible. I have a bad feeling that my GPA at cuse will hold me back from many universities I want to attend. I also understand that most graduate schools and medical schools want a full academic history before admitting anybody. Has anyone been in a similar situation as I am? Am I completely hopeless?
You didn’t “goof.” You had/have a heath issue that you are taking care of. Your health should come first. Once you get well and begin to gain back confidence, I believe the rest may very well fall into place. Take some time, get healthy, and get back on track, even if that track is a different one than you thought it would be. Wishing you all the best.
You will want to make sure that your community college transcript reflects the new direction you are headed. Choose your classes carefully, meet with an academic advisor to make a transfer plan, and get the support you need to get better. Bring your transcript with you when you meet with the academic advisor and specifically talk about grade replacement.
What is your status at Syracuse? Would it be possible for you to go back after a couple of semesters at a community college?
Who is paying your college costs? With that many failed courses, it is highly unlikely you have met Satisfactory Academic Progress…and if that is the case, you would not be eligible for any financial aid.
If your goal is medical school then:
- Take care of your health first. Once that is in order…
- Talk to a transfer adviser at your State U. Ask what they would expect to see with CC grades and how many years you would need to attend before they would consider you.
- Go to CC and get all A’s. Retake the classes you took the first time.
- But don’t take any pre-med pre-req classes at this point.
- Transfer to the State U and continue with the pre-med classes, retaking anything you have failed or gotten a D in.
- Apply to DO (not MD) schools for med school. They allow grade replacements. MD schools do not.
A few things jumped out at me. “I was not able to unlock my full potential at all.” and “am I completely hopeless”.
I think maybe you have been told what your full potential is, and what you’re supposed to do with it. But your day to day existence is not in sync with this idea, and maybe it’s blocking you, and that’s why you say things like “am I completely hopeless”.
I think you just don’t know what you’re supposed to be yet, and until you do, the current dream you have is sort of like an albatross around your neck.
Maybe make a list of the things that you’re good at, and the things that bring you joy, and see if you can find a good overlap, and then start fresh from there. Let go of all the stuff weighing you down-all the “I’m supposed to’s” and “my life will only be good if I do this” dialog.
It doesn’t matter what "it"turns out to be, what matters is that it has meaning for you and informs and drives your life, your inner fire, which I think is in there.
Take some time to be ok, too.
