@Dartmouth_21 do we know how many people usually apply? I think they’ve expanded the program recently too. More locations to accommodate the interest, I guess.
did anyone from the seattle program hear back?
@medicsunburn i think a few thousand apply, and theres like 6 locations (cambridge, seattle, atlanta, LA, NYC, Chicago) so 180 spots
i feel like this year’s program is not as competitive as last year… it seems to me that less people applied
@Dartmouth_21 There are 8 locations this year: Atlanta GA, Cambridge MA, Chicago IL, Los Angeles CA, Mountain View CA, New York City NY, Pitsburgh PA, Seattle WA. Only 2 are residential - Cambridge and Seattle. That being said, competition for residential spots are probably higher than the commuter schools.
@selxx23 I actually think its more competitive, but that this thread has a lot of lurkers (ppl who follow but never post)
yeah the competition definitely varies. Pittsburgh probably has a lot less applicants compared to the Cambridge residential session. More people should be getting calls today!
@Dartmouth_21 I wouldn’t expect any calls today. It’s Good Friday.
i don’t think good friday will have anything to do with it. the company is not specifically christian and there is work today.
@puretruth Apparently Good Friday isn’t a national holiday in the USA! I was so surprised - because it is in Canada! Only certain states celebrate, and California isn’t one of them
yes there is work today lol
for the people who got the scholarships, what was your experience with cs?
^ and what were your stats/ hooks (if any). thanks!
Do you guys think they notified all the scholarship winners? Cuz I know last year they didn’t announce them all at the same time. Or should I just give up hope??
@sweatearl i don’t think so! Probably in the next week
Even if I didn’t win the scholarship I would go tbh. But if I get into MITs interphase EDGE program my parents would make me go to that instead of CSSI, unless I won the scholarship. So I’m really hoping I get this scholarship. But I’m not expecting it tbh
@Dartmouth_21 @spiciestmemelord Well honestly as cliche as this may sound, I do not think stats matter as much … if you can convey your interest in cs then you should be a competitive applicant. But I do remember stalking last year’s CSSI thread and the stats of those who got in made me feel a LOT MORE confident in myself so I might as well share mine
GPA: 3.9 unweighted
SAT: Really bad actually got a 1250 with a 570 on the Math section but apparently that didn’t matter
EC’s: Started a comp sci club at my school since my Title I high school cant afford any comp sci classes(we are legit the only schools in the county that dont offer such classes, we even had to cancel our robotics team cos of funds), Member of a club that specifically helps students at my school go to college since barely anyone goes to college at my school, and I also made sure to emphasize that I SPEND MOST OF MY TIME TAKING CARE OF MY SIBLINGS because my mom works many jobs to take care of us
LOR: My recommendation was from the sponsor of the comp sci club I started and it was barely even three lines and it was so generic
ESSAYS: I love my essays especially the WHY CSSI one. Fun fact: nobody proofread them for me and I alctually saw some typos while looking through them a few minutes ago but they showed who I really was-- my adventorous soul, and my eagerness to learn
HOOKS?: African who immigrated a few years ago to the US, father is unemployed, did Girls Who Code( is that a hook?), POOR AS SHIT, and succeeded despite my many many obstacle.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT STATS ARE REALLY NOTHING, I GOT A 570 ON THE SAT MATH AND THEY STILL CONSIDERED ME!! YOU ARE MORE THAN A NUMBER. I’m rooting for all of you and I really really hope I get to see you all in MA during the summer
@Fawziyah thanks girl! & i know stats arent the end all be all for CSSI, just was curious congrats again!
Thank You!!
@Dartmouth_21 So my stats are quite low actually. All signs pointed I was not going to get this scholarship but then again, I guess the stats do not really matter
STATS: 3.8 GPA, 24 ACT 24!!! (26 Math) like I said… pretty low compared to others that applied.
EC’s: 3 technology-based programs, one was for web-design and the others were for robotics.
LOR: Letter of recommendation was from my trig teacher from last year.
ESSAYS: I spent quite some time on my essays, but I spent the most time on the questions that asked us to explain a feature of YouTube, my financial need for the scholarship( BOY DID I NEED IT), and why I was interested in CSSI.
HOOKS? Same us @Fawziyah . Moved to Chicago from Ghana a couple years back, mentioned my goal to help build a more technological community back home in Ghana and I think that was pretty much it.
I got a 24!!! So anyone that has already lost hope, should not because anything is possible!! I wish you all luck
@dnov99 congrats!!
