I took the SAT in December and received a 2290 (800 M, 800 CR, 690 W).
Is it worth taking the ACT or are my scores fine? For most of my colleges I am at the 25% for writing unfortunately…

Before tackling the ACT,I would take the NEW SAT after January 1, which will not include writing any longer…more like the SAT of years ago. Most top colleges will be impressed with your Math and Critical Reading as it is. Have you tried any practice tests with the two score format?
You can try the ACT. I would study SAT writing, as it is easy to improve.
The new SAT combines writing and critical reading into one section. It does not eliminate writing.
You can always take the SAT again and try to get a better superscore by improving Writing
The new SAT format will be released in March, after the late Jan test date. New format will include essay, and as of now, selective colleges will want to see essay until they figure out how to handle the new format. Scores from this new exam will not be released for six or seven weeks, unlike the current 19 day schedule.
Many schools have come out and said that while they will continue to superscore the SAT, they will not combine scores from old and new exam formats, so if you think you will retake to increase writing score, please take in Nov, Dec or Jan, so that you do not ‘lose’ your excellent 800/800 score.
I would be hard-pressed to convince my son to retake with the scores you have.
