Got a C- and trying to do damage control

I am a junior at Cal. I guess this semester I was trying too much by taking 6 courses, and I just got a C-...I normally get As.

Since I want to continue to grad school, GPA is really important. So just trying to do damage control--should I plead the professor to change my grade to F and retake the course so that my GPA would not be affected? Or should I just go along with this C-..

Thank you for any suggestions

If you get an F and repeat the course, the original F grade will still show. That your Berkeley GPA allows replacing the grade won’t matter to any PhD program or professional school, which will evaluate the F and the repeat grade by its own method.

Why would you think that one C- in a record that otherwise has all A grades is such a big deal?

thanks for your reply=)

I normally got A-range grades, but I don’t have straight A record (there were A-s and B+s…) Also, I don’t think my grades for other courses are gonna look good either (simply got screwed all over)…

Now I have serious self-confidence issues and doubt if I can get into any PhD program at all…don’t they screen out resumes simply by GPA for the first-round applications?

Oh the horror, B+'s?! You might as well apply to Burger King.

Many schools do screen by GPA and though they don’t announce what the cutoff is, it’s normally around a 3.0 or a 3.3. One C- and Some B+s and A-s aren’t going to keep you out of grad school (the adcom most likely won’t even ask). The fact that you even think that means you either haven’t done enough research or you’re very paranoid.

You can still go to any grad school you want with one C (given that your gpa is still good, your ECs are good, etc.)

I would stick with keeping it. Depending on your field, you might address it in your letter of intent when you apply to grad school. GPA is just one of many–many–things that are looked at and you might have other things to offer.

Best wishes!

thanks for ur kind words…yeah I’ll admit that I’m very paranoid…had never thought of getting Cs in my life…

but I feel much better now thanks again =)

I am in grad school now and I received a C also while in Berkeley.
I suppose it depends what kind of grad school you’re looking for.

But if it’s a standard PhD program that is not Med/Pharm or Law or other very competitive program at a top university, I can assure you getting into grad school is not a problem no matter what grades you get.

It is simply a matter of do you wanna do grad school or not.

Aren’t grad school admissions very competitive, especially for the top universities?

Um, I said ‘that is NOT Med/Pharm or Law or other very competitive program at a top university’.

If you have an A-/B+ average, just take the C- and learn from it.

If you have a B- average, then i would try to change it.
