got a C in multivariable calc! will this hurt my chances of grad school.

I am a chem major at UCLA. I just finished my first quarter and got my grades: A in my GE class, A+ in chem, and a C in multivariable calculus ( our multivariable calc is split up into two parts math 32A and math 32B. I had math 32a this quarter and will be taking 32b next quarter). I am hoping to go into research in chemistry and attend grad school. Will this C hurt my chances of getting into a top grad school for chemistry or will i be able to make up for it by getting A's in math from now.

You’ll be fine as long as you do better in more advanced math classes. I think grad schools like to see an upward trend. Whatever you had trouble with in 32a make sure you know for 32b because multivar calc builds on previous concepts. I’m not sure about this, but I believe differential equations is the most important math class for you to do well in as a chem major.

RavenFan is right.

I go to UCSC which also splits multivariable calculus to two courses. I think all the UCs use the same book for the two courses (which was authored by a bad UCSC math professor). I got a tough professor for the my multivariable course but I managed a B. I suggest you review single-variable calculus for integration and of course what you learned in your class. You definitely need to know vector geometry, even I have trouble with that.
