I received a D in AP English Literature and Composition. My weighted GPA is just over 3.0. I applied as a Computer Science major to:
-SJSU
-SDSU
-Cal Poly Pomona
-Cal Poly SLO
-UCSC
-UCI
-UCD
-UCSD
-UCB

Right now, you’re only a competitive candidate at UC-M, UC-R (most other UC’s will want a higher GPA) and Cal Poly Pomona. Not sure about SJSU.
You should also apply to a few other schools. Check out NM School of Mining and Tech, Santa Clara, Chico, DH, Northridge.

You are not screwed. Relax. I would continue along with your current plans, and if you hit a bump in the road you can always go to a CC and transfer in with an AA, which should take priority (in terms of grades) over what you did (or did not do) in HS.

Well, UC’s typically don’t accept D grades and want you to maintain a B average in your senior year. You never know though. Send that higher score!

Those are all out of reach, especially since applying for CS is very competitive. There simply isn’t much of a chance at all, but I wouldn’t say your college education is screwed. However, I feel that it would be a waste of money to apply to the majority of the UC’s. If you still want to, I highly recommend that at least don’t apply to Cal. Use the money you would spend on another more reasonable school.

I would say if you could manage all A’s next semester, trimester, multimester, or whatever type of block scheduling your school uses, you should be fine. Just bring the your unweighted GPA up to above a 3.0, and all should be good.

@PotatoMan and others: UC’s require a specific minimum GPA to apply and do not factor in Spring semester senior year. 3.0 is okay only for UC-M (and even there it’s the bare minimum). So, NO, OP doesn’t stand a chance to the UC’s on his/her lists, even without the D, except for UC-R and UC-M and perhaps another lower-tier. With the D, a couple UC’s is fine but “just to see”, keeping expectations low.
There are possible schools listed for CS in #4 and there are plenty others where OP had good odds of getting in.

To the ones you listed? Send an email to withdraw your application from each of those campuses. It just isn’t worth it… spend the $50+ elsewhere.

Is the D your only bad grade so far in high school? If so, I would consider writing them an essay or something explaining the bad grade. I had a friend who got really sick her senior year and her GPA dropped significantly. She wrote an essay explaining this to the UC’s because all of her grades before this were stellar. She goes to UCSD now!

@mandypandy I wish this was my only poor grade. The only A’s I’ve gotten for a long while we’re in my Calculus BC class. Other than than, from K-12, my performance in school has been “sub-par”. My grades by no means reflect my intelligence or will to learn, but for some reason, I have never been able to excel in school.

For the sake of the morale of others that happen upon this thread that may be in the same boat I was in, I will be attending UCI for my undergrad education in Computer Science.
