Hi. I just got a D in calculus this fall. I must notify the UC Application center of this grade. Will this D affect my chances at SB? I know that UC isn't supposed to look at senior grades though. Any insight is appreciated.

Why do you think you know that?

Actually, they do look at senior grades. Admission they offer when you get an acceptance letter in the spring is conditional. For most UC campuses it is conditional upon getting a B average (unweighted) each semester and no grade below a C. Otherwise they might rescind you. They don’t ask for a 1st semester update from each student the way some colleges do because they know they are going to accept you with these conditions. So just because they don’t ask most students to supply 1st semester grades doesn’t mean they are ignored.

They do look at grades for deciding about admission if you get a grade below a C since they require you to report them. For completeness, I want to point out they also require you to notify them of any changes in your planned schedule.

So yes, it will affect your chances of admission. They allow you to include a letter when you report this. I suggest you think carefully about what to put in this letter, and go over it with your counselor before sending. It needs to accept responsibility for the grade and explain what you’ve learned from it and what you plan on doing differently going forward.
