I'm not even going to try to make excuses. I got a D because I was really lazy and never studied. Guess summer classes aren't for me since I was in a total summer mentality. Now I'm worried about how this will affect the future, such as grad school admissions. I'm an engineering major and it was a calculus class, so it's obviously very important. I'll be retaking the class in the fall at my university (I took it at my local CC this summer), and if I get an A or B, will that D not matter as much?

If you retake the class and get an A or B it should be fine. I think the D will show up on yout transcript but won’t be calculated into your GPA if you retake the course and pass it.

If that is your only blemish on your transcript I wouldn’t sweat it. You could always take up the option of having an interview with an admissions person with the uni you want to go to for grad school and explain it if you need to, but since you’re retaking it and aiming for an A I wouldn’t worry too much.

Sorry…but to be blunt…you kinda brought it on yourself. I mean if you knew you were going to be in summer mode, idk why you would take a summer class. That’s what you get. Next time you won’t be so fast.

And good luck trying to HONESTLY explain during an interview how you got your D. “Well you know…it was summer and I just didn’t feel like studying…summer is the time to relax!”

Well obviously she brought it on herself, but things happen. I know people who have done worse academically and still made it to grad school.
Honestly if they see her retake it and see an A and she continues to do really well that D won;t even matter as it won’t even be calculated into her GPA.

That sounds like a great explanation for an interview. And if the interviewer thinks he is lazy and doesn’t want to hire him, OP could always serve up a knuckle sandwich for the interviewer so he can at least he’ll feel better about the whole thing.

i said she in my post. so if you’re not a she I meant to say he/him…lol

No it will not affect you in the future. Just forget about that little thing. You’ll be fine.

You will live. One D won’t affect your future.

It won’t matter at all if you retake the class and do better. The new grades what will be calculated into your GPA

How will it even show up on your transcript? Simply just don’t request that the CC send the grade to your university.

You have to submit all college transcripts for grad schools.

Anyways, thanks guys.

If you got a D in Calc I, you should really rethink majoring in engineering
