Got a D my freshman year in alegbra 1.

My freshman year, i got a D second semester of algebra 1 ( i passed first semester with a C), then the next year i passed geometry with a B. My junior year i passed algebra 2 with a B first semester and a A second semester and i plan on taking AP Stats my senior year next year, can i still apply to a CSU? will that D ruin my chances into getting into chico state? My dream school.

You C grade 2nd semester validated your D grade 1st semester. Also Cal States do not use 9th grades in their GPA calculation. As long as you passed 2nd semester Algebra1 with a C along with your subsequent Math classes, then you should be fine for Chico State.

Chico State like most Cal states admit by eligibility index and major.

EI= (CSU/UC GPA x 800) + (SAT Math+CR) or (CSU/UC GPA x200) + (ACT composite x10)

Cal states use the capped weighted UC GPA.

Aim for an EI of 3700+ for the best chances.

what if i got a D second semester though?

Sorry, I misread the post.

A D grade 2nd semester does not validate the course. You can validate the D 2nd semester by taking and passing a higher level of Math which you have with getting passing grades in Geometry and Algebra2.

I’m a California resident and when I applied to CSUs, they didn’t ask for my freshman grades (per my memory). So I think you’ll be okay, since Cal States aren’t as competitive as UCs (unless you’re out of state). Besides, even if you got in and sent them your official transcript, they’ll see a positive trend in your grades from your freshman year, which is always a good thing to have. As long as your unweighted GPA is okay and your SAT/ACT scores are high, you have a good shot at the CSUs in general (depending on which you want – CS Fullerton vs Cal Poly SLO are very different applicant pools). Best of luck!

The CSU application will ask you self-report all grades Freshman - Junior year for the a-g course requirements. CSU’s do not use Freshman grades for their GPA calculation, so your D will not negatively impact your CSU GPA. Yes, they will see the D grade but you have validated your Math class for 9th grade by passing the other two classes along with meeting the CSU minimum Math requirement. You also show an upward grade trend so calculate out your CSU/UC GPA and eligibility index. As stated above^^^ usually a 3700+ EI will get you into Chico state and most of the other Cal States. Exceptions are Cal states Long Beach (EI 3900+) Fullerton (3800+) Cal Poly Pomona (3800+) and SDSU (4100+). Cal Poly SLO uses MCA points not Eligibility index and 9-11th grades so it can super competitive depending upon intended major.
