I'm a first year at Cal Poly Pomona and I have messed up pretty bad my first year. The thing I want to do is go to a community college from summer through the next year and attempt to get a decent gpa so i can transfer to a better school like ucla or usc. My question is can I apply to the community college and not mention Cal Poly Pomona as if I've never gone there? I really don't want my grades from Cal Poly Pomona to show up

sorry, you have to show grades from every insitution that u attended when applying to any school. If u don't u risk getting ur admission revoked.

Can i ask why u messed up?

yes! as long as you dont transfer ur transcript from cal poly....nobody will know =)

i don't know who to listen to right now in the above two posts...and as to why i didn't do well...i never went to class and partied too much

if u dont mention cal poly wen u apply....there shouldn't be a problem...to be sure, call the uc/usc and talk to the counselor...

collegeman,
I have a link from a FAQ from my CC.

interpet it any way u chose.

http://www.smc.edu/transfer/faq/#12

yah i just read that...can anyone else clarify this? i really dont want these grades to show up and im fairly sure i can do well at the community college

what if i completely withdraw from my university? will that work?

bump..help please

i doubt that will work.

also if your GPA is bad in a state univ it won't get better in CC.

Ok, collegeman. You probably don't have to tell your cc about your grades at cal poly. They probably don't care anyway. However, when it comes time to transfer to USC or UC, you will have to send them a Cal Poly transcript as well as a CC transcript. If you decide to conceal your earlier transcript, they may find out during the admissions process or later on and revoke your admission. They may even fine you or press charges for purjury. In my opinion, it's a bad idea that may end up hurting you down the road. And despite what others may say... colleges and universities do have the resources to check if and where you have attended other institutions in the past.

Bottom line... it's best to be honest. Show the admissions committee that your first year performance does not reflect your true ability by turning around and doing extremely well for your second.

Good luck!

Yeah, I wouldn't risk lying to them. I'm pretty sure they ask for all institutions attended.

One way to get caught is via financial aid transcripts. If you had financial aid at Cal Poly and need financial aid again, you are screwed.

Another way to get caught is to mention to the CC you went to Cal Poly Pomona. Your previous attendance will show up on your CC transcript depending on the CC. Obviously, you cannot use anything at Cal Poly Pomona to satisfy prereqs at the CC.

Maybe your bad grades are telling you something... maybe college isn't for you and switching scenery isn't going to help. I would withdraw from winter quarter (if that's possible) and try to do something (e.g. work) to find your direction in life. The earliest you should return to Cal Poly or go to CC is Fall 05. Forget summer school. You gotta find out what you're going to do with your life before you proceed. Not going to class and partying too much is a sure sign you don't have direction.

i have no financial aid and i can simply mention to the cc that i did not attend cal poly. schools like usc look at your high school stats if you have under 30 units and my stats were 3.4/1350 so i think that is ok. I think if I even try a little at a CC i will do fairly well. And you're right bouncingboy, i had no direction, but now im trying to get back on track before im a goner.

Some words of encouragement: I had a 1.9 after my freshman year @ CalPoly SLO and was VERY close to dismissal. I got my act together and now make A's and B's. A lot of people might have said college wasn't for me at that point, but I knew it was. With a 1350 you're a bright individual, and can do a lot of meaninful things with your life. It seems like you feel college IS for you, so get your priorities straight. Lying on your next app, though, is not a step in the right direction.

All I can say is that the UCs are very strict in their policy of reporting all grades and every institution an applicant has attended earned. That cannot be stressed enough. There's really no way around it, and it's not worth the risk. Listen to Shinkun, Giants8307, and highschoolda's link... they all have very good points.

As for your CC, talk to a counselor. The reason I say that is certain classes that you passed at Cal Poly may be elligible to replace certain classes at your CC (and maybe even at a future school) so you don't have to take them again (e.g., prerequisites, breadth; see www.assist.org) -- in this case, they will need your Cal Poly transcript. On the other hand, if you didn't pass such classes, your CC may have some kind of policy regarding re-taking classes, even if taken from a different institution (I'm not saying there is or there isn't, but you might want to make sure).

Besides, doing horrible in your first year of college can work to your advantage. It becomes a growing period and if you look at it positively, you can better explain to the schools you apply to why you deserve a spot at their school. You can explain what went wrong in the past, and what you did to fix it today, and for the future.

If you dont list all the colleges you've attended, then your application is invalid. If you've already received final grades on your transcript, then that will have to go to whatever school you attend, if not you could withdraw so its all W's rather than the grades. While you may get away with it by not mentioning to your cc or the next college you transfer to, you run the risk for 4 years of being expelled from the university if they ever find out. Also if you mention the college to your cc then the next school will know anyways since your transfer record from Cal Poly will be on your cc transcript(This may not be at every institution, the ones I've gone to do this). Also, for both schools, you might have to have some sort of explanation for what you had done during that time period you were at Cal Poly, which if they ask for what you did, you'd have to lie again.

my second quarter here at cal poly isnt over yet...if i withdraw right now can i be saved from showing cal polys transcript?

Nope. You already have 1st quarter grades that you need to report.

If you withdraw now, you'll have to report all W's (if according to the withdrawn time period), in addition to your grades from your 1st quarter.
