For UC's specifically...

When you calculate your GPA, do you average out your GPA for the year or do it by each semester.

Like let's say for example, I got a 4.0 first semester and a 3.5 second semester. Do you just average it out to get it?

You figure it by adding up the number of courses you took and figuring the grade points, then dividing the grade points by the number of courses. This way if you don't take the same number of courses in each semester, you still compute it correctly.

Here's an example: Presume sophomore year, all classes worth 3 units--

First Semester:
Algebra/Trig--A
English--A
European History--A
Graphical Design--A
Spanish--A

Second Semester:
Algebra/Trig--B
English--A
Governmental Systems--B
Health--A
Spanish--A
Band--B

Each A is worth 4 grade points per unit, each B is worth 3 grade points per unit.

So first semester is 4.0 GPA--15 units, a total of 60 grade points.
Second semester is 3.5 GPA--18 units, a total of 63 grade points
Both semesters combined give you 123 grade points, with 33 units attempted,
therefore 123/33= 3.7272 or a yearly 3.73 GPA.
