The drop probably has a bit to do with the dorm project; however, that's not the only reason. Another is that more people from the class of 2011 opted to attend Vassar than expected, so the current freshman class ended up a bit bigger than the school was planning on. Add to this the fact that this year saw a rise in college applicant numbers across the nation, and it makes sense that the acceptance rate dropped quite a bit (from 28% to 23%).

Ouch.

So scared imagining the acceptance rate next year (when I apply).

How hardcore is Vassar rowing and how is the quality of the music (specifically guitar)?? I am really interested in Vassar and have heard many great things about it but am extremely curious about these things??

Question: How hardcore is Vassar rowing and how is the quality of the music (specifically guitar)??

Answer: Crew is a club sport here, but, that being said, it's still quite competitive. I have a friend who was on the team this past semester, and she felt it was quite grueling. As I don't row, I can't give you more specifics than that, but would suggest that you look at the team websites: Men's Rowing at Vassar/url and [url=http://athletics.vassar.edu/rowing/w-index.php]Women's Rowing at Vassar/url. As for your question about music... the major itself is quite strong here, and there are a variety of different musical groups, both department- and student-run. If you're interested in the department further, check out the site for it as well (once again, I haven't participated in instrumental music or music classes at Vassar, so can't tell you much else) [url=http://music.vassar.edu/]Home - Music Department - Vassar College. Instrumental lessons, including in guitar, are also offered through the music department.

Does Vassar recruit for crew and if so what are times that are really noticed???

Question: Does Vassar recruit for crew and if so what are times that are really noticed???

Answer: Although I know we have it, I don't know the specifics about when recruiting for crew formally goes on. That being said, my advice would be to get in touch with the crew coach (the head for both men and women is Rodney Mott) and fill out this recruiting form required for all club and varsity sports... For Prospective Students. Hope that helps as a place to start.

no, i'm sorry , it didn't say anything about how many applied ed.

Are there any companies that provide laundry service for Vassar College students? As in they pick up and drop off once a week type of thing?

Um, if you can't handle doing your own laundry, Vassar may not be the place for you.

Seriously, as someone who has been doing laundry for about 30 years, if I could afford to pay someone to pick up my dirty laundry and drop it off clean and folded I would dance a jig and find something WAY more interesting to do with the time I had spent doing laundry. Pure drudgery.

Actually I know that NYU students can purchase the service that the poster has asked about. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with not being ABLE to do laundry. Heck, as the mother of a very laundry-challenged kid, again, if I could afford it, I'd pay for the service just for the peace of mind knowing that my kid wasn't wearing five-day-old clothes...or worse!!

:-D

"dc89 Um, if you can't handle doing your own laundry, Vassar may not be the place for you. "

LOL!!! I am a parent.

With all that students have to worry about, if they don't "have" to do their own laundry, why would anyone else care? My daughter is perfectly able to do laundry. However, I recall that when I was in college, my roommates and I would never do laundry until we absolutely "had" to. And being honest, my definition of "absolutely had to" THEN, makes me cringe NOW.

Also, as a parent who has her own laundry facilities, but who uses shared facilities on occasion (hotels, vacations), it's just not that much fun to carry your stuff down to the laundry room only to find all the machines taken. Or, returning to find that the dryer did not dry. I am sure that Vassar has the very best of laundry facilities, but, as the other poster noted, with 30 years experience, there's not that much to "love" about doing laundry.

Question: Are there any companies that provide laundry service for Vassar College students? As in they pick up and drop off once a week type of thing?

Answer: Nope, no laundry service here at Vassar... I think that's more of an NYU and Amherst College sort of thing. It's not that hard to learn how though... just practice a bit over the summer before you get here. And, it's not like you need to stand around in the laundry room waiting for your stuff to finish: you can leave and come back when the countdown is up. If you're still daunted by the idea, you might be able to find someone (ie, a student in search of an easy way to make a few bucks) here willing to do your laundry every couple of weeks for a sum of money, but no promises :D

Seriously... if you come to Vassar with a laundry service, you better be prepared to get a LOT of grief for it.

Also, it would rob the freshman girls of one of the finer moments of the first month - watching the boys try to do their laundry by themselves for the first time. Priceless.

"Answer: Crew is a club sport here, but, that being said, it's still quite competitive."

I'm fairly sure rowing at Vassar is not a club sport. The recruiting form also seems to be only for varsity sports.

Crew is not a club sport at Vassar. The crew program is a Div. III sport which legally cannot recuit an athlete but if an interest is shown, it may be helpful to the admission process.

i know someone who does crew at vassar, so if you want i can ask him or get you in touch with him

Sorry for the misinformation... I have a friend on crew, and believed from what she'd told me that it was a club sport, but it is indeed Division III.

I just posted a new Thread on the manin Vassar Board, do you think you could answer my question?

Thanks so much!
