got accepted, but have some questions

does anyone know how's the actuarial science program at UIUC? i haven't visited UIUC yet, so i am planning on visiting soon, but should i schedule the daily visit program or the admitted students day? and do they have a special visit for LAS like busness and engineering? thanks

hey dude I remember you being on here and UM forum and posting a lot.

Congrats. Go to an admitted student day

It is a good program. The key to success of being an actuary is, however, not necessarily your college degree or where you go to college, but getting through the tests that you must take (a couple while still in college, the rest after, which can take a number of years) to reach fellowship status in the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society. Like actuarial programs elsewhere, it does not have a lot of students in it. Despite the importance of actuaries and lucrative careers , the field remains an unknown to most and there are never a lot of applicants.

The daily visit program essentially just provides basic university info and a walk around the campus. Admitted students day will get more concrete info although still a lot of fluff to it. Not aware of any LAS visit program and it would make little sense --the majors in business and the majors in engineering have similarity to each other, LAS majors are most often completely different from each other. The most informative visit is the two-day one you will take after you agree to admission which takes place in summer and at the end of which you will actually enroll for classes.

thanks you all for replying. i know the key to success of being actuary is just passing as many tests as i can, but like some schools’ actuarial program will cover 2 tests while some cover 3 or 4 tests. and is there a lot of difference b/t daily visit and admitted student visit? because for the admitted student visit, they only have 3 more days to schedule for.

Illinois’ program specifically takes you through first four tests

thank you drusba!! one more question. if i decide to change my major to accounting after 1st year, can i still do it? because act. sci is in LAS college, but accounting is in buz college. do i need to reapply to their buz college or just simply change it to there?

you have to meet requirements after your freshman year and talk to your advisor to try to transfer to business

thanks. does any of you know what’s the date to sign up for classes? because i am planning on going to china this summer, but dont want to miss any important evets/days

UIUC has a summer orientation program. It lasts two days during which you get presentations on such things as security, billing and payment of tuition and fees, the health program, available facilities, course requirements (gen ed and major), recommended course schedules per year, the computer and email systems, you meet with your advisor, and at the end of the two-day session you register for your courses. They have several such two-day sessions usually beginning late May and going through first half of July. When you accept admission, you send in a form in which you give a first and second choice of the session (and possibly a third) that you want and then they inform you which one you get. If you cannot make one of them, they have another session just before classes begin in August. However, highly advised that you go to the earliest one you can because courses will be filling as the summer sessions progress and waiting until Aug session can mean you may not be able to get courses you want.

thank you so much! so can i find out these session dates anywhere? or do i have to accept my admission first?

you can’t register for the date until march I believe

is there a big difference b/t admitted student visit day and daily admitted student visit at 10 AM?

if i choose to switch college in my sophomore year, they will just look at my freshman year’s GPA right? no ACT/SAT from high school?
