Got accepted early as an RD Applicant!

I’ve applied to a much smaller list of schools…wowzas, you guys are ambitious! :D

Smith (accepted! :slight_smile: )
Barnard
Bryn Mawr
Mount Holyoke
Skidmore
SUNY Binghamton (accepted :slight_smile: )

I’m passionate about going to a women’s college (clearly!). As a young woman who wants to study science, I’m eager to be in an environment where that’s encouraged. I’m still waiting for my other decisions, but Smith, Bryn Mawr, and Barnard have always been my top choices. I have to admit that now I’m partial to Smith after the arrival of my early write. :D

ahhhh! i got an early acceptance yesterday as well! so jazzed!!
congrats to everyone!
i had no idea smith gave out early writes so i was in complete shock

No idea, sk0001

Vassar College
Sarah Lawrence College
Wellesley (got a possible in EE)

I got my Wellesley EE likely yesterday and my Smith early admittance letter today! I’m so happy!

Daughter received an “early write” letter today. Very happy with
Smith. Daughter and wife thrilled! Me too!

Smith-- “early write”
University of Florida-- Accepted
Wellesley- RD ?
Bryn Mawr- RD ?

Congrats to all the Smith “early writes.”

.02 David

I’m also wondering what early writes mean in terms of STRIDE. I’m still shocked that I received my letter!

I’ve always seen STRIDE scholarships at Smith as a way to lure candidates that people in admissions fear losing to Ivies and other peer institutions (don’t get me wrong – I see Smith as a highly selective, academically rigorous place…why people consider it a safety is beyond me!). I’ve worked hard, and my grades and extra-curricular accomplishments certainly reflect that, but my standardized test scores aren’t through the roof or anything. Smith certainly doesn’t need to worry about losing me to Harvard. :wink:

According to Smith’s website, they award about 50 STRIDEs a year, which certainly makes me wonder how many early writes go out and, of them, how many are STRIDE recipients…only time will tell! Good luck, ladies. My fingers are crossed for all of us.

Just got an early acceptance letter from Smith today–two days after my likely from Wellesley. Awesome week haha. If they offer me some significant merit aid, like STRIDE, I’ll probably be at Smith next fall.

I also received an early acceptance letter! Although I can’t say I’m surprised, it’s so nice to know :slight_smile: the only other school I had heard from was SUNY Binghamton. Congrats to everyone else who was accepted!!

Wow congrats to everyone for the early acceptance!
I honestly had no idea that Smith College offered early acceptances for the RD pool, so I am getting a bit nervous, haha. I am an international student and have applied for financial aid.
I can’t help but be curious - but have any international students received STRIDE acceptances or any earlies so far?
Since international FAs tend to be extremely limited, I was wondering whether the results come out later than the norm or around the deadline of RD notifications.
Please let me know if you received any notices from Smith as an international applicant!
Thank you and congratulations again to everyone who were accepted early :smiley: !!

Where did folks get the idea that financial aid for international students at Smith is “extremely limited”?

Smith provides 100% of need of all students admitted. According to the 2011-2012 Common Data Set (you can look it up yourself), Smith provided more than $6.4 million in institutional financial aid for international students. 151 students received it, and the average package was for $42,387 (which is $5,000 MORE on average than domestic students received - $37,618). What is likely true is that it is more difficult for international students to be accepted. But their aid is most definitely NOT lower once they are admitted.

I got one, too! When I first read it, I thought it said they were admitting a “select group of applicants only” and thought they decided to reject me early or something. Then I reread it an saw it said “early” instead. And then saying I got in, clearly I was happy haha.

I haven’t read the other posts, did the Dean of Admissions add hand-written notes to others’ acceptance letters? I thought it was a sweet touch :)

Oooh, just kidding, I just went back and read the numerous posts about the hand-written statements. Mine was about my Common App essay and (basically) said ‘You can both find and become a role model at Smith.’ (:

CrewDad hasn’t weighed in yet with the more accurate information about the number of STRIDE scholarships. It’s not around 50 scholarships, it’s more like 200-250 scholarships awarded out of the who-knows-how-many RD acceptances. So it’s a larger number than presented on the Smith website but still quite a select number given the total number of RDs. Each year about 50-60 students accept the STRIDE; that’s what that number means. I already said this on another thread: if you get a STRIDE scholarship, take it. Nowhere else will you get the kind of research opportunities from a well-established, successful program for the first two years of your college career. It will propel you forward in ways you wouldn’t dream. My daughter’s doing her spring semester at Oxford right now and I’m firmly convinced the STRIDE research she has on her resume had quite a bit to do with it.

Just a curious RD-er here, did anyone’s bannerweb change?

@wellesleygal
Mine didn’t the last time I checked. I’ll go check again.

EDIT: Nope, no change.

@CarolynB
Thank you so much for that piece of information and the advice. It reassures me a ton.

My D. had a STRIDE at Smith, which was put together specifically for her. It basically wrote her ticket to graduate school at Princeton. Her Princeton students don’t get anywhere near the research opportunities she had at Smith, and, in fact, in their first two years, they don’t get ANY, and in the Humanities, other than their possible thesis, they don’t get any either (that’s what they employ her to do).

I am already sold on Smith, just REALLY hoping for the STRIDE :)

CarolynB – Thanks for the info. I thought 50-60 STRIDES were awarded and only 30 people accepted them. The 200-250 makes me feel a lot better! I’ll be constantly checking my mailbox :slight_smile:

Cannot wait for admitted students weekend (which is April 19-20. I emailed my student interviewer and asked, after I thanked her and told her of my admission!)

Smith is my top choice! But seeing you guys performance so well, I start to worry about my chance. Up until now, I still don’t get anythings back from Smith yet, I wonder if anybody here just get the accepted letter still today? I wonder what is the last day Smith send out those early accepted letters for RD.

@CPUscientist3000
Is that Open Campus or Discovery Weekend?

Larentia, I asked about “admitted students weekend”. What is the difference between those two?
