Got Accepted into Letters and Sciences at UMD College Park. What does that MEAN?

I recently received my acceptance letter from UMD College Park with my major stated as “Letters and Sciences”. I initially applied for the Robert H. Smith School of Business (my non-LEP major was Philosophy). I am transferring from PGCC with 47 credits ( I am currently completely the last 13 credits for my Associate’s).

How and when will I know if I was accepted into the School of Business? What should my next move be?

Thank you to all who took the time out to read and comment!

Pick up the phone and call them. Easy peasy

I will definitely do that tomorrow morning, I was just wondering if anyone could give me any informed insight tonight. Thank you for your comment though!

The nature of this forum is that unless you’re extremely lucky and happen to catch that one person’s attn w/the specific knowledge – your question is simply too specific. Why rely on guesses when a 5 minute call will tell you EXACTLY what you need?

Good luck

Well, I kind of wanted/expected someone who had previously been accepted into the Robert H. Smith School Business to respond and let me know if that was standard procedure or if their acceptance letter stated something different. Either way, I have sent my reminder to call in the morning.

Thanks!

@flyles2017 - The Robert H. Smith School of Business is a Very competitive LEP and you did not get accepted into it. You will be bale to apply for an internal transfer, once you matriculate. But note that even internal transfers for Smith are competitive and not guaranteed, like other UMD LEPs are. Good Luck.

Thank you for the insight, SoofDad! I was just about to call the admissions office.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

You have to maintain a certain GPA after a year(two semesters) in order to get into a specific school outside of the letters and sciences.

does it necessarily have to be a year or is it possible that you can remain in letters and sciences for one semester. @dreamadream

i didnt apply to biology LEP right away because Im short of calculus @dreamadream

I believe you can apply after only one semester, but it would be best to consult with your L&S adviser for your particular situation

I believe you can apply after one semester but you still have to wait 1 year( 2 semesters) to be accepted, you have to maintain a certain GPA

I’m a biology major too, so I’m going to be going through this same process

@flyles2017 : please return and explain what you were told on the phone. This will be useful to other readers who get the same letter you did.

I am posting because I want to share what we learned about the Letters and Science acceptance at admitted student’s day today- my student applied as a Business major. First point is admissions does not fully understand how this program works. Key Point is that just because you are an internal transfer applicant you are not given priority to the LEP of your choice. In fact from what we were able to gather they actually commit to a local community college a certain number of acceptances. Another key point is that a transfer to your school of choice is very competitive-you need to do better than the students directly admitted to the school in order to transfer. For example,to get into the business school from Letters and Science you need a minimum of a 3.5 GPA after taking 45 credits, yet apparently all you need is a 2.0 GPA to stay in the business school at a 45 credit review ( as per the Business LEP information @lep.umd.edu). Third important point is that no one at the admitted students open house could tell you the percentage of students in Letters and Science that get into their school of choice after taking 45 credits- either they haven’t done the analysis-unlikely for a leading research institution- or they do not want you to know. Overall, my impression is that they are providing a dubious path to the business school that exists for only very few students. If you didn’t get into your major I strongly suggest you talk to as many people as you can and ask the tough questions. My student was accepted to many great business programs and I find it a disservice to try to entice students to UMD through the Letters and Science Program. Do your homework.
