Hi everyone. I'm currently a freshmen in the Smeal College of Business here at Pennsylvania State University. I applied as a transfer student to BU's and NEU's business schools and got accepted with a lot of money. However, the price that I have to pay for these two schools are similar to my price for Penn State. I am sort of unhappy here at Penn State and it seems like my GPA of 3.67 will drop a bit lower after this semester. Should I transfer to one of these schools or should I wait one more year and then transfer to even better schools like NYU, Georgetown, BC, etc.?
I am very indecisive right now and I would like anyone's opinion. Thanks in advance!

I don’t think you should base your decision on the prestige because it’s so subjective. Visit the schools and see which one you like the most. If you’re looking to be a Wall Street Banker, well, the same companies recruit from pretty much all of those schools.

Thank you Geo674.
Anyone else??

I am currently a penn state student looking to transfer after next year but for different reasons. I would say if you are unhappy at PSU like me definitely transfer. Make sure the school you want to transfer into will make you happy. BU and NEU are both great schools I would go for it. If you could check out my thread that would be great.

I agree with Geo674, visiting them helps make a decision, I applied to BU and NYU, but I am leaning towards BU, because they have a campus. Visiting and learning more about the schools helps, and see if you can stay in a class related to your major to get a bigger idea on how many professors approach students.

Thanks guys. Anyone else? As for rankings in business, it seems like northeastern and bu are above penn state now. I am so confused right now.

I agree, you need to visit the schools and take a tour. You want to make informative decisions based on fact, not assumptions. Participating in their admission tours or perhaps one of the student ambassadors can take you on a private tour, it will help you make an informative decision.

I flew from LA to visit schools, and NEU was one of the schools. I can’t emphasize enough - visiting a school makes a difference. (Your on the East coast, so you can probably drive up there easily or take the train.)

Congratulations on your accomplishments so far, and your transfer acceptance!

Best to you.

Wait the extra semester to get into a better school!! Use the extra semester to reflect on yourself as well as maximize all your experience there and learn from it. For instance, I was at Fordham and was extremely unhappy at my school and desperately wanted to get out. With this unhealthy attitude in mind, I applied as a transfer and got rejected everywhere except my back-up transfer school: Northeastern. I knew the social and academic identity at Northeastern didn’t jibe with me, but I also knew it would be better than Fordham.

The best decision I ever made was to not settle. I stayed the extra semester, got an internship, volunteer, and took all my experiences to enlighten my 2nd round of the transfer application in an intense introspective act. I got into my first choice, Middlebury College, on full ride and couldn’t be happier here. All to say, NEVER SETTLE. If you don’t feel you identify with Northeastern, don’t go. Shoot for the stars, as they say.

Thank you so much for your response. My only problem is that if I stay for an extra semester, there is a chance that my GPA will fall, which will kill my chances of attending a better university. Do you think I should just stay though?

With every student, the semester is a chance that their GPA will fall. Nevertheless, don’t let your GPA fall, don’t even let yourself think that it will fall. Put your best efforts in to learn and that will always give you good results. My experience with the transfer process is that your college GPA carries a HUGE weight, with essays carrying even more. Allow yourself this opportunity to prove to the college you want to go that you have amazing potential and that it’s squandered at Penn State.

In the worst case scenario that your GPA does fall by a lot, maybe go to Northeastern. But again, your gpa will only take a dive if you allow it to.

My first semester gpa was a 3.67; however, after this semester, it seems as if my gpa will drop to around a low 3.5… I feel depressed and I don’t know what to do. I submitted my deposit for Northeastern for now.

Congrats on the acceptance!

anyone else??? I’m still so confused. sigh
