Got "accepted" to UIUC, but alternate?

So, I'm not sure how this works, as this is my first college decision I've received. I applied for a Computer Science major but they said they couldn't accept me in that one specifically, but gave me a list of alternate majors:

College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences:
Agricultural & Biological Engineering
Technical Systems Management
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences:
Biochemistry
Chemistry
Mathematics
Mathematics and Computer Science
Physics

Statistics and Computer Science

Anyways, the difference between regular computer science and Mathematics and Computer Science seems to be at different colleges (CS is at Coll. of Engineering).

My questions are:

Is it "good" that I was at least "accepted" (should I be happy? lol) ? how much stronger was my application compared to others who got completely denied? That's probably because CS is a really competitive major, which would mean I had a solid app, but just not for straight-up CS?

How do they choose what alternate majors I am allowed to pick? Do they look at majors that are similar to my #1 major, and then add my information to the requirements of the alts?

Also, what is the difference between CS and MCS?

Lastly, should I take the chance of going to this college? And if so, what major should I take? What are the chances that I can actually get back to my intended CS major?

Thank you.

Are you me? Same exact situation and questions.

hahaha Pretty crazy man! At least we both got in!! But yeah, CS being extremely competitive combined with the fact we’d transfer to the College of Engineering, from outside, is pretty damn scary O: I don’t know if I would want to take the chance. I gotta make a plan…

I’m hoping Drusba will comment here. I know of several applicants with seemingly great stats that were turned down for their first choice of ECE and offered the LAS computer programs this year. I’m wondering if he could provide any stats on this years ECE class, and the similarites between the programs, and the likelyhood to transfer into ECE from them in the future.

Yes. This is the exact same situation that I am in. I applied Computer Engineering and Computer Science, both in the Engineering Department, and I was instead given the choice of an alternate major, all of which are listed by PercMastaFTW. I don’t know what to do. Computer Engineering and Computer Science in ENG was my dream. Will the job prospects be different in Computer Science in ENG vs LAS? How easy is it to transfer from this MCS program into the Engineering Department? I have many questions. I also hope that Drusba will give his input.

Yes danny, once you choose your alternate major, it says that they will send the official acceptance letter!

Edit: but yes, I hope someone with some knowledge will comment soon! Hopefully it’s not THAT different…but at least we should have a solid chance to make it into our #1 majors

Edit 2: I found this post by drusba last year: “With the engineering major you must take the same math, physics, and chemistry courses that engineering majors typically take first and second year. With LAS major, you do not have to take those chemistry and physics courses but have to take some additional upper level math courses that engineering majors do not have to take. otherwise, the CS courses available are the same. The engineering major carries with it the national prestige of UIUCs engineering college. The LAS major, which has been around for only about six years, is not yet quite I. The same class but is getting there.”

Here is the link: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-illinois-urbana-champaign/1414139-whats-difference-between-computer-science-eng-vs-las.html</a></p>

Basically, you take higher level math in LAS math&CompSci but dont need chemistry/physics ENG CS takes. But then, LAS from UIUC doesn’t have as much prestige as the ENG CS… boo

Easy answer: if you like theoretical computer science and math (i.e. this class: http://■■■■■■■.com/math347</a>) go for Math and CS. If you like practical, you’d want to transfer which means sign up for physics 211 (and maintain a 3.8-4.0 gpa)

Drusba, if you see this post, can you please respond? Getting denied from ECE has really hit me hard, and I want my questions answered by someone very familiar with UIUC.
