Got admitted...now what

ok so i was recently admitted into iu, i intend on majoring in bussiness, do i have to apply seperatley for the kelley school of bussiness, or will they let me know if i have gotten in as im almost positive i put that as my intended major

If you are a direct admit to the Kelley School, you will receive notification within a few weeks after your admission. If you are not a direct admit you will be in the University Division and apply to be admitted to Kelley after you have completed some basic requirements during your freshman year.

You will need to go through an orientation at which time they will give you data about your major and give you some placement tests and then have you attend an advising session based upon your prior classes and the results of these tests.

After this, you will be allowed to register for classes for the upcoming semester–and they will help you with doing that registration step.

Calcruzer, when is orientation? I read somewhere that it runs from June through July, is this accurate? And do they schedule or can you pick when to go?

Yes, it is June through July–and they will give you a choice of dates as soon as you receive your acceptance. Plan to register for the earliest convenient date–since the sooner you do your orientation, the sooner you register for classes (meaning you get the best choice of courses and times).

Calcruzer I was accepted back in September, should I be aware of these orientation dates? I don’t believe I received them.

I thought I read where you have to send your enrollment deposit in first before you can register for an orientation.

I think your right 2Leashes.

Here’s what I read:

“Register for and attend New Student Orientation. Starting in mid-April, the Office of First Year Experience Programs will send out official invitations to students. Freshmen entering for the fall semester must have paid their $100 enrollment deposit to receive their invitation. International students will receive information about orientation through the Office of International Services.”

Kids who KNOW they’re attending IU for sure have a definite advantage. They can get that enrollment deposit in NOW and be at the top of the list for the orientation invitation, etc. I’m not sure about most of you here, but my daughter still has 6 more colleges to hear back from all in CA. I don’t know if she’ll be able to make a quick decision on the spot. Even though IU has been her first choice pretty much all along…it all depends on things like financial aid and if she even GETS accepted to any of these remaining schools. Either way, I have a feeling she’ll probably mull it over and wait until right before the May 1 deadline. I hope it’s not too late to get her Orientation invitation and be able to get preferred classes if she ends up at IU.

Is it common to notify IU a lot earlier than the May 1st deadline of their intention of attending? Gee, I hate being in limbo like this! I envy those of you who absolutely know where you’re going! Just like kids who applied ED. The decision is made! :)

How LONG is orientation? My D is planning a possible trip out of the country that encompasses most of June, some of July…then a camp for some of July. Is orientation required? I thought it would be the week prior to school/welcome week. Not the same thing?

Orientation is 2 days and the student really does need to attend (parents not so much). My daughter committed to IU in mid-April and was able to sign up for one of the July sessions. She was able to build a lovely first semester schedule (got everything she wanted with no 8am or Friday classes), so that was not too late in her case.

Uh-oh. M D will not be available June 14-July 5 (ish), AND July 11-17 ish. So…you say there is more than one session in June and more than one in July?

Maybe no worries…my D WANTS 8am classes! Even though she’s a sleep-til-noon person on weekends, she feels she would waste the day with a 10am class. Bet she gets over THAT pretty fast, when all her friends are sleeping until 9:53 or so.

I think there were sessions later in July, so it probably won’t be a problem. The sooner she commits to IU the sooner she’ll be able to book an orientation session that works for her. And yes, it will only take one semester of 8am classes for her to figure out why students work so hard to avoid them!

R12…, back in 2007, multiple orientation sessions were scheduled between June 12th and July 19th. Not sure of the exact dates this year, but I’d think that they are similar. It sounds like you have a short window of time from which to choose, 7/5 to 7/10. However, I can’t imagine that there wouldn’t be some dates available then.

Welcome week usually starts on the Wednesday of the week before classes start. Move-in is that Wednesday + freshman induction and, unless budget cuts have changed things, IU then hosts a picnic for the students and their families. The picnic was a nice touch, I thought. Once it is over, it is a natural time for families to say goodbye.

You can move-in a day early for a nominal charge. We took advantage of that option both to avoid some of the crowds and so we could get to Target/Best Buy before those same crowds for the things that we would inevitably forget to bring with us.

Thanks all. I’m sure we’ll work something into that window, or… well, things will work out one way or the other. I just don’t want her to set these plans in stone if she could get some approximate dates (can’t accept IU until we’re sure of her other acceptance/rejection/aid packages…so, April 1). I was just worried, it sounded like it was just one 2-day event in June and one in July. Thanks all for clearing that up.
