Got an award today....should I/how to tell schools?

Today my partner and I got 1st for the Robot Ramble event in the NJ Central Regional Finals. It is a pretty big accomplishment, we spent hours and hours working on the robot and gained 1st place by only 2 points (out of 277) to the 2nd place team.

I should tell my schools, correct? And how should I go about doing it (letter, etc)?

Any chance you'll have new updates/awards sometime soon?

Send a letter to admissions notifying them of the updates. I'm pretty sure they'll just put it right in your file. Don't email - use snail mail.

Congrats, Fandangoya! My son also received good news yesterday and his guidance counselor plans to fax the award letter to his top two colleges tomorrow.

Ok.

How should I write out the letter. Something like this?

First, how do I start it? Dear X University? To Whom it may concern?

And then, should I write something like this:

I am writing to tell you that I competed in the Science Olympiad New Jersey Central Regional Finals on January 9, 2007. I was awarded 1st placement in the Robot Ramble event, among twenty other high schools.

Then, should I describe the event or something?

Thanks.

Congrats on your gold! Robot ramble is a difficult competition!

My son's updates - a couple of years ago - were written like this:

Dear Dean **** (or Mr. regional admissions rep),

I am a freshman applicant for admission to **** College for the fall of 2007. Please accept this midyear update to my extra-curricular / honors profile.

**** Ohio Regional Science Olympiad Competition
Gold ? ****
Team (list placement if you Qualified for State Competition)

This information may be submitted as a snail mail letter. Alternately, some colleges allow you to submit update information with you midyear grades.

If you anticipate another prize or two in the near future, you may wish to hold the update for a bit so you are not sending letters too frequently. I think that deans and admissions reps are at least passingly familiar with the SciOly events - and robot ramble is pretty descriptive.

My son's regional admissions rep at UChicago advised him that a brief description of the honors (e.g, a bulleted list) would be most appropriate. Other colleges may prefer other formats - you might want to give your top school or schools a call and just ask.
