Got an "F," still hope?

I got an "F" in some online fitness class. Now it's permanently attached to my records, but I'm still ranked 17 out of ~570 kids (previously ranked 8 out of 1,000 kids or so, but we all got rezoned). I have a good reason for this F: I simply didn't have time.

Not only did I have a very busy schedule with ECs and all, there were the hurricanes and a TON of family issues (mainly a couple deaths and financial problems). I was withdrawn from the class, but I still got an "F." I'm retaking it now and it will replace the 0 point in the my GPA, and I'm quite sure I'm getting an "A."

... as you can see, my passion lies in the media.

Jobs:
Assistant business manager for my parents' nail salon, because I spoke English. I didn't have a definite pay (ie: no cash payment).

Awards:
Nothing major. Lots of honor rolls, English Student of the Quarter. Proclamation from the City of R., California for excellence in history.

Classes taken (non-AP):

I only took 3 years of science and 3 of foreign language. Junior year: science couldn't fit anywhere in my schedule. Latin IV or AP Latin was not offered.

Misc. stuff: I write short stories, draw, paint, et al. I consider myself definitely on the artsy side. I was practically living in poverty as a kid (I lived in a sweat shop, no kidding). Now I live far from poverty, but not what most Americans consider richly. I'm obsessed with the UK. I love to travel. My family spends all our saved money only on travel. Sometimes, I wish I was Oprah, The Traveling TV Journalist.

Major: modern culture and the media, and/or philosophy, and/or psychology, and/or international relations. Most likely culture and philosophy.

Sorry for the outrageously long profile.

Schools I wanna look into:
Brown
Wesleyan U. (in Connecticut)
Middlebury
Haverford
FSU School of Film

I also need suggestions for schools I should look into.

it will look bad. a gym class is uber easy.

Yeah, but it was online. That might count even more against me though... anyway, that online class required a whole bunch of time and energy I didn't have.

can you retake the class? or try to explain in your essay...

I am retaking the class. I'm getting good marks so far, and I think my counselor is going to explain it.

I wonder if it makes a difference if it was a WITHDRAWAL F and not a FAILING F. Same difference, I suppose. I have my reasons, though, and there really was nothing I could do.

Brown- Rejected
Wesleyan U. (in Connecticut)- Rejected
Middlebury- Accepted
Haverford- Accepted
FSU School of Film- Accepted

Yeah, I would hate the SAT too if I were you. Its your one thorn. Brown will be tough, the rest could go either way, I really hope you get into Wesleyan. Add Vassar, its VERY similar to Wesleyan/ Brown and its an overall awesome place. Its a must apply.

USC isnt a community oriented school or overall amazing experience, but it can't be beat in film. NYU and UCLA also shouldnt be missed for a film person, they are top notch.

an online gym class? how does that work?

lil_killer, there are a bunch of schedules for workouts, worksheets, nutritional info and all that. They require official documentation of participation in activity (which admittingly, could easily be winged).

Strangely, it's highly time-consuming: essays, essays, a whole bunch of projects that are rather tedious (e.g. mapping out what family members do every day for a week, including an exercise they do alone, one they do with another, one they do in a group, et al).

My SATs make me very sore. I'm going to retake the SATs (since my score dropped), both I and II.

I'm dying to get into Wesleyan and Brown. If I got into both, which is rather unlikely, I couldn't choose one over the other.

Vassar was on my medium list, but it's not on my short list. The fact that it's 60% women kinda wards me off.

Other misc. info: I'm the first in my family to go to college.

A lot of colleges recalculate gpas using their own standards, and courses like PT are not included.
