It looks like most people in this thread understand what consulting is. Not to mention the way you phrased your question was condescending.

No one is going to hold your hand through everything. If you looked carefully in the OP, the statement said:

This presupposes that people who are asking questions have the basic knowledge of what consulting is. I also gave you a great site that discusses consulting in more depth than I can offer. You can continue to come off as a holier-than-thou ******bag and stomp your foot because you don’t know how to use a search engine, or do your homework and then come back to “chat with the big boys”.

Okay Emprex. It’s clear you’re incredibly immature. First off, a ****** bag is a device that emits a medicinal jet of water. Second you’re vulgar, improperly using terms, and insulting others that merely wanted an answer to a question. You’re clearly suffering from intellectual and social immaturity, regardless of your age.

It’s not holding your hand to actually define the terms you continually use.

Also stop making assumptions and press ALT F4.

For the sake of your inability to use the world wide web, Palier, here are a couple of good links from sources that are more credible then 90% of the people on here.

“What is consulting” – Institute of Consulting (UK)

Hi, if someone isn’t going to a big name school, but is part of highly selective programs that offer unique opportunities (such as spending two years in Hong Kong) and have unique skills would that give them a chance?
(I’m talking about management consulting btw.)

Also about the life in general, do most new hires travel a lot or does that arise once one becomes more experienced?

You have to make the most out of it and put things in perspective. I get to travel the country and sometimes the world for free. I live a unique lifestyle relative to friends and family and there are tons of fringe benefits that come with it. I fly in first class all of the time because i am always upgraded, I never pay for a hotel when I travel, flights are typically free given how many points I have earned and I earn per diem which is totally tax free.

I don’t get to enjoy the cities I travel to very much during the week (outside of going somewhere for dinner), but I do have the opportunity to stay for the weekend or fly to another city in the country for free in lieu of going home.

Attitude is everything and you have to embrace the lifestyle. Perfect for right out of school.
