Got Bio lecture, not lab/lec or lab, what to do?

Hi,
I think I know the answer to this question, but I got off the waitlist for Kittlesen's biology lecture, but I'm still on the waitlist for his lab/lecture and an actual lab.
If they are allowing students to sign up for the waitlist does that mean they are working one getting these students in. Probably not I guess.
Should I e-mail him for assistance?
Should I take this Intro. Biology lecture my first year, and do the lab/lecture and lab next year??
Should I take them all in the summer? Though I hadn't planned on summer school.
How hard is it to force add for lab courses like this?
I guess I could take it next year and probably won't have trouble scheduling since I'd have a jump on all the incoming first years.

There's a BBQ in NoVa for UVA students??? Dang, I'm OOS.

Okay, first take a deep breath and count to three.

All right, you really should take the lecture, lab lecture, and the lab together since the class will work that way. The waitlist is just a way to balance things since they are 3,000+ of you incoming first years. I was waitlisted in one of the labs for a class I am taking in the fall, and I got in it fine. Just wait before thinking about taking the class over the summer because either UVA only has lecture in Summer Session or the lab credit at your local university or community college will not transfer. You may get into the lab lecture and lab in a matter of time. Take it from me, a guy whose first semester schedule was complete the second day of classes.

Good advice, UVAMalex. I did send a brief thank-you-for-the lecture e-mail to Prof. K, and asked for help, if he could, with the other lab stuff. I figured it couldn't hurt. I have until 8/13/07 to sign up for the bio lecture.
If I do take the lecture without the lab, then I have to drop a class that I like. I'll be patient. Thanks.

I guess I could take the first semester lecture, without lab stuff. Then when I register 2nd semester, I'll register for the whole package. Am I crazy to be thinking this way??? Does anyone ever split a course like Biology, lab/lect., and lab like I'm kind of advocation?
Then 1st semester of 2nd year, I'd take make of the first semester lab and lab/lect.??? Sounds screwy to me.

It's a terrible idea to split lab and lecture since they go together. You will likely not perform as well in lab if you wait a semester.

If you are in lecture as you have said before, your professor will, and I repeat will, give you a spot for the lab lecture and lab. In the first class, he will most likely say to register for a lab lecture and lab because a few people have not registered for them for various reasons.

What is this about signing up by August 13th?

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea how preparatory schools and their curricula have anything to do with registering for classes and peripherals, but I would believe any ISL school you go to will help you prepare for your college of choice.

Make a new thread for any questions or thoughts you have if there is no appropriate thread for them.

"You have been offered a space in the class, BIOL 201 0001, INTRO BIOL:CELL BIOL & GENETIC (9012V).
You have until 8/13/2007 8:24:32 PM to accept the space or you will be automatically removed from my waitlist and you will not be able to put your name back on this waitlist."

Thank you so much UVAMalex. I hear you loud and clearly. I'm gonna stay with the bio lecture and I too, feel that they have to give me the lab/lec/lab stuff. They just have to, it only makes sense.
Anywhoo, I have copied and pasted what I received via e-mail. There you have it: 8/13/07. This clearly is not something that you've heard of before. And what's with the 8:24:32pm time deadline?????? You know with so much being in military time, and then to intermix other time definitions: it could set up for calamity.
You are so kind to be responding to my ISIS-drama! I can tell you are a nice person--thanks!

No problem, jimmyjam. I think the exact time deadline has to do with when you put your name down on the waitlist. Good luck and maybe you'll get your lab stuff done by tomorrow.

I think it's okay if you take them in different semesters. I earned 6 credits of BIOL201 and BIOL202 and another 6 credits of CHEM141 and CHEM142 from Advanced Placement. I think quite a lot of students are like me. I guess it's fine since labs also go with 1-hour lectures.
HOWEVER, if it is possible i'll def. recommend you to take them simultaneously.
I have no idea why UVa doesn't give the lab credits. Other schools do.

Update: Well, I have Kittlesen's Biol. 201, but no 203 lab/lecture or 203L-lab.
I'm waitlisted, but got this e-mail from someone named J. Chaplin in Kittlesen's office.
I'd like advice from someone who has taken Biology 201 and 203 about what this person writes. Is it true at UVA? See Below:

"Hi -- the Biol 203 lab lecture and lab section class has absolutely nothing to do with Biol 201. They are two entirely different classes and do not have to be taken concurrently. Your registration into Biol 201 has no bearing whatsoever on your being invited to register for Biol 203 from the waitlist. If you're waiting for that to happen before you accept and register for Biol 201, there is no reason to do so. If you don't get invited to register for Biol 203 this fall, you can try for it in the summer or fall next year. J. Chaplin"

I really don't want to separate them out, that just doesn't sound good.

I've taken them both.

And you can take Bio201 and Bio 203 during different years and do just fine. The Lab class for Bio 203 is different than a lot of lab classes at UVa, in the sense that it is a completely contained course. Lab lecture will provide you with enough info to do well in lab, and if you take Bio 201 before Bio 203, then you will already know the material covered. Bio 203 lab deals a lot with gel electrophoresis and that type of lab material. Taking 201 and 203 at the same time didn't really help me more than if I had taken them different semesters.

J. Chaplin is in charge of the 203 Lab. She schedules the rooms, TAs, and getting students into the class etc. Kittleson just gives the lab lecture, but Chaplin handles all of the logistics.

Don't worry though. You'll get into 203. Just put your name on as many of the waiting lists as possible and eventually spots will open up as people re-arrange their schedules. I wouldn't stress over it. People add/drop classes into about the first 2 weeks of class so things will open up. Just Breathe.

The only bummer about 203 is that it is offered as a FALL only course, so if for some reason you didn't get in, you would have to wait till Fall 2008. That's because they offer 204 in the spring. You don't have to take 203 to take 204, so if you didn't make it in this semester, take 201 anyways (good to get that class out of the way... I remember it being a lot of reading) and then take 202 and 204 in the Spring. You could then take 203 next fall. But I think if you are just patient, you'll get into 203 this fall. Just remember, it doesn't matter what your schedule looks like on the first day of class, everyone switches things up.

I'll enroll in two similar level classes knowing i'll only take one of them, then go to both on the first week, decide which one I like better and will do better in, and then drop the other. Tons of people will shop their classes like that during the add/drop period, so don't stress -- Just check ISIS and add to the waitlist!

k_jo,
Thank you so very much. I'm going to do exactly as you say. I'm signed up for 201. If I get 203 great, if not, I'll take it next fall. I'll plan for 202 and 204 in spring 2008.
I didn't really know who Chaplin is or whether or not to trust their advice, so your input really helped me see straight.
Thank you.
