I'm a 2nd year student in community college, looking to transfer to UC Davis as an economics major. I have a 3.7 GPA and my UC TAG application was accepted by Davis.

According to UC TAG, I have to be done with Calculus 2 by Spring 2015, which I was on track to do. However, my huge issue is that I got a D+ in the last past of the Precalculus series, ruling me ineligible to take Calculus 1 next quarter. I have aced every non-math class I've taken and my units are on track so GPA, units, and IGETC fulfillment is not an issue at all.

Is it possible for me to still transfer to Davis as an Econ major next fall if I'm only done with Calculus 1 the end of Spring? Or could I possibly take 1B at Davis or over the Summer and still transfer through general admission?

Am I ruled out of being admitted? I just don't want to stay for a 3rd year just because I need one class and have done absolutely everything else in flying colors.

I would really like to know if anybody has gotten into schools missing prerequisites.

I just wonder about the wording, in the Assist page, it says “strongly urged”, but to be guaranteed admission through UC TAG, you MUST have calculus 2(1B) done.
Here’s an image of the assist page since the link doesn’t work.

My experience with UCD TAG, they are really strict, so if it says it needs to be completed, I would wager they’ll stick to that. However, you would still be eligible as a regular student.

Would it hurt my chances a lot? I’ve aced every single class taken except for Statistics(C+), Second part of precalculus (B), and of course the D+ in the third part of precalculus. So I’m just worried they’ll turn me away seeing that I won’t have calculus 2 finished by the time I transfer.

I believe UC TAG says all grades must be a C or better in your selective major. If you can enroll in a higher Calc it will negate the earlier class, I believe, meaning the D will be part of GPA, but most likely won’t matter for analysis purposes. Also, isn’t pre-calc simply a pre-req to get to the major requirements? So probably pre-Calc isn’t counted as a major requirement.

The needing of calculus 2, I’m not sure where it says that. I did a quick scan of UCD TAG by college and didn’t see it. But if it does say it is required, you will need it. But as long as you can move forward in the calculus chain, you can possibly get it completed.

I can’t open the link I have no idea what the *** is.

Yeah it seems the links become broken. The second link was an imgur screenshot of the articulation agreement for my economics majors from college to Davis.
I might be wrong and getting the TAG confused with the Assist articulation agreement, which shows those classes but only says “STUDENTS CONSIDERING GRADUATE STUDY IN ECONOMICS ARE STRONGLY URGED TO TAKE MATHEMATICS 21A/B/C AND 22A”.
And I’ve looked and you are right about the C or better thing, so if I retake it as well as take a Calculus 1 class, I wonder how they’d rule that.

I hate when they are somewhat vague with the rules, but I would think Pre-Calc is a pre-req to a major req. Thus, pre-calc is not a major req. So get a C or better in Calc 1, and I’m assuming all will be well.

You should contact a UC TAG rep at Davis to find out if they factor the D in to the major req. if they say no and you can go straight to Calc 1 without needing to retake pre-Calc, I would consider that (unless your CCC has a c or better rule in pre-Calc to move forward).

If you fulfill all the TAG req without retaking pre-Calc, why waste time doing it? Your GPA from CCC is wiped out the minute you get to the UC. Although retaking will help the GPA at the other schools, of course. Davis has already told you you’re TAG approved, right? So if the D+ doesn’t factor, why redo it, if Davis is where you want to be.

The people that know the for sure answer work in admissions at Davis. You should be in contact with them. If you’re ok w/o it they’ll know, and if not but there is any flexibility in the rules they are the ones to make the call. Certainly things are not going to go better if you do nothing until they see your transcripts.

They are there to help, give them a call. As Davis wrote a few years ago in their alumni magazine

getting low scores in math really hurts your chances for econ because econ is all math based. But then again Davis isn’t the most competitive school so it is possible you will still get in. Although you will struggle hard and possible fail unless you get better at math.

Actually, my DD attends Davis and they have become very competitive because they over-admitted 2 years ago, so she says a lot of people are being rejected.
I would advise against majoring in Economics if you have had difficulty in Pre-calc. You have to have a strong base in mathematics to do some of the team projects.

I can’t go to calculus 1 without finishing the third part of precalculus. My professor won’t budge at all, so I have no choice but to retake the third part of precalculus to take calculus 1.

If I get a C or better next quarter, would it then just overwrite the D+ on my transcripts? Apparently because I’ve gotten an A and B in the first two sections of precalculus, this grade wasn’t going to change anything regardless(unless I aced this class) because schools only accept 7.5 quarter units of precalculus out of the 15 possible from the 3 classes.

I just hope it’s still possible to keep my UC TAG good.

It does rewrite it, but whether or not TAG will stay in effect, no one can really tell you. Since you have to retake it, there’s really not much you can do but wait it out. You will be noting the retake in TAU.

As others said, reaching out to the TAG advisors might be a good thing, if for no other reason than to find out definitively.

I get it - kids don’t like talking one-on-one with these people, but the irony is things go better the earlier you do it, as the advisors do want to work with you, and can give you some possible tips.

Find a UCD TAG advisor email and reach out that way.
