I Have Been deferred through ED from an ivy and im pretty upset. I went on an unofficial and official visit. On the trip, the coaches talked about me and another freshman being the core of the specific unit i participate in. I gave them my SAT's and GPA and they said everything looked good. When i committed the coach said he was very excited and he would support my application wholeheartedly. HOW DID I GET DEFERRED!
I run track btw

First off, did you receive a likely letter? If so, then that is VERY odd.

Second, I talked to a girl on the team when I went on my OV who was deferred early and then received a likely letter a few weeks into January. (Do not remember the exact reason why).

Edit: Also, verbal commitments are weird. Without a Likely Letter, it is pretty much a one-way street. You are committing to the school, yet they are not committing to you. A common phrase around here is “you don’t have anything until you have something.” So, perhaps you misconstrued the coach’s words. Also, ivy league admissions are never 100% for anyone, even recruited athletes. There are always cases where one slips through the cracks and gets deferred/rejected because either the coach thought their grades/scores were good enough, or they wrote crappy essays and/or had bad recommendation letters.

In summation, there are a variety of factors that could have led to your deferral, but without more information, we really aren’t able to help you.

Last note: Call the coach and see what is up. He can usually get a little more information regarding your application.

Definitely call the coach. My nephew was deferred but ended up getting a likely letter and being accepted. He was deferred due to grades in 9th & 10th grade…and admissions wanted to see his first semester senior grades.

But he kept in touch with the coach and eventually it all worked out for him. (he was heavily recruited also so it came as a shock for him to be deferred)

erolimes,

Sorry to hear about this. Just to clarify…Was there a “meeting of the minds” between you and the coach. Did you tell him you wanted to go there, and it was your #1? Did the coach tell you he would sponsor you through ED admissions? If the answer is yes, yes and yes…I would call the coach immediately.

Sorry to hear about this. Yes, ask the coach.

A friend’s student had this happen last year…The student was told by the coach that they would be happy to have her join the team…yet didn’t have a slot for her (her times were slower)–yet would “support her app when admissions saw she was an athlete” etc…The student took that to mean that the coach was supporting the app (and she didn’t have a slot/LL) so got deferred and in the end denied.

It is important for a student to know if they are on the A list or B list and whether a slot has been set aside (assuming the academics pass muster)
and as some wiser parents have posted here–the coaches can say “we’d love to have you on the team” which is not telling a kid they have a slot/LL…

Hmm, that is quite weird. Did you receive a LL? Either way, call the coach and see what he/she says. Keep us posted.

I’m aware of a very similar situation. Student committed, applied ED because the coach gave the green light. S was deferred because several non-athletes with better scores and grades applied from the same school. S was admitted RD. This is an ivy that has a similar ‘policy’ with large donors.

hm… i have heard of this before with other athletes, but i would DEFINITELY call the coach asap. this may just be the schools way of doing things. A coach told me that at a specific school, i would likely get deferred if i applied early so i should apply regular. (Early action at this school is competitive)

if you signed a letter of intent… i think thats a different story

erolimes, I am sorry to hear this news as well. I remember your earlier posts when you were visiting the school.

I don’t know anything about it all, but I hope those who suggested they just need more time, or have to do this a certain way because of test scores, etc and other applicants in the ED pool are correct!

Have you spoken to the coach? I hope he was able to put your mind at ease. Good luck! Let us know what happens.

Thanks guys. I hope the case is that they will accept me RD. I committed to thee team and made it known that it was my number 1 school. THe coach said he was extremely intrested in me but the issue of a likely letter never came up. My father has called the coach but he was not in. I am just in shock because they told me that i would be accepted barring any significant drop in grades or trouble with the law…etc.
Thanks for the support. I love CC haha

Also they wanted me to be the core of their jump program. So I am guessing thats a high recruit. We contacted each other over the summer very often.

erolimes, so sorry to hear this. I know I was one of the CCers who told you it looked like you would be admitted. I was also one who mentioned LLs to you. This should be brought up with the coach as soon as you can get ahold of him. Maybe admissions would provide you with an LL prior to the RD deadline of your backup schools so you wouldn’t have to go through applying to more schools. With no LL, you certainly should plan to send out some applications. Best wishes.

Hello guys. I got accepted to the Ivy. As you guys said, my freshman/sophomore grades weren’t as strong but after they saw my senior year course load and grades( A’s) the coach informed me that i had been accepted. Thank everyone for your help during this process!!

Congratulations on your happy ending!! I hope you have a wonderful 4 years on this team, and at your chosen Ivy :)

Yay! Congratulations and good luck with your college and jumping!!

erolimes congratulations!!! Enjoy a good night’s sleep tonight- possibly the first in months? Best wishes for the rest of your senior season and collegiate jumping career.

Oh, congrats erolimes! So glad it all worked out for you :-)

Wishing you the best of luck at school and in your sport!! (track, was it? Too lazy to look back although I do remember the school - enjoy!)

erolimes,

I’m very glad to hear this worked out. Typically when you hear about things like this happening, they do not end well. You were the exception.

Can you share with us what steps you took to resolve the issue? What advice would you give to others to avoid this in their Ivy athletic recruiting? Thanks.

Congratulations…

Yes, do share how you resolved this / advice. etc

Good luck!
