Going to U of I. Fantastic.

On financial aid forum, OP mentions that parental income from last year was $100K and they have assets of $400K (which assets will need to be put into the failing business later). But just taking a snapshot at a specific instant of time, this family would look like they could afford one year at D–which is what the financial aid office must have thought.

It’s a disappointment, but with your parents suffering so much financial uncertainity, it makes the best sense to go to the college that has enough academics and a great $$ package.

Aranyria, the best thing you can do now is to find ways to fall in love with U of I. Make friends. Track down the courses that will challenge you. Get to know your professors. Study to get the best grades possible.

Contrary to popular CC belief, going to and graduating from an Ivy is not a golden ticket. You can make your future anywhere, as long as you have the right attitude. And in four years, you might even think that this FA disappointment was for the best.

Good luck!

I was in almost the exact same situation this year. I was accepted to Dartmouth, but my family’s income looked artificially inflated because of my dad’s severance package (he got laid off halfway through last year). Unfortunately my appeal failed. My conversation with parents went the same way:
“Mom, I got into Dartmouth!!!”
“Great… how do you expect us to pay for that?”
Dartmouth was my dream college and I was so happy when I learned I was accepted. It was one of the best moments of my life. Now whenever I think about all the work I put into not only my application, but all of high school, all to earn this acceptance… then have it denied to me (“just kidding, you can’t afford this”)… I feel sick to my stomach.
I wish where you go to college didn’t depend on the family situation you were born into. I wish it was based solely on merit.
Now I will always wonder: what would my life have been like if I had been able to attend Dartmouth?
