I got into my top choice off the waitlist. I need to tell the school I was planning on attending that I will no longer be going there next fall. How do I do this? Call them? E-mail them? And what do I need to say, exactly?

Call or e-mail them. Tell them that you were accepted off a wait list, thank them for the honor of being accepted at the school and wish the school and the entering class nothing but the best. Done.

It would be nice if you also tell the school you are turning down the name of the school you will be attending. They keep track of that sort of thing.

My son just wrote his letter today. He told school#1 that it was with deep regret that he would not be attending, and what an honor it was to have been accepted to the school. He then went on to say that he had unexpectedly been taken off the wait list at school#2 (naming it) to which he had applied ED. He added that his decision was not made lightly since he had already become emotionally attached to the school#1, but at the other he had a family legacy, and extended family in the area. And so on.

It was a hard decision… even though he made it in about 10 minutes. There were pros and cons to both schools, but applying ED in the first place means you were 100% sure in the first place. He was still 100% sure.

I suggest you look up the Registrar’s office on the school’s website. There may be some FAQs to read that give specific directions on how to withdraw. At the very least, you can get the address to write them a letter making it official.
