Got in!

I just got my acceptance letter today, but I applied on a whim. Can anybody tell me more about the school? Will it be easy to transfer out of if I don't love it?

Hey, I would be happy to tell you more about Hollins! In fact, I'm in the process on writing you a private message answering some of your questions. Look for it in the next few days. :-) Oh, and congrats!

Thank you so much!

I will be looking forward to hearing more about Hollins, and your experience so far. What other schools did you look at when you were applying?

Thanks again! :)

Congrats!! :D

If you're on LJ or even if you're not, I created a couple huge posts on a community called womencolleges. These posts include inquiries about other women's colleges (BMC and SBC) but there's quite a few things on Hollins, as well :) Feel free to check them out, since there's quite a bit of information from alums and current students alike:

The more I've read, the more I have found that to love. Hollins is pretty amazing (: Bryn Mawr still is number one for me, but that may change after I visit heh. I'm kind of waiting to see how I integrate with the other women because I'm from the North and whatnot. But it should be fun (:

Congrats again :D

Joycelene,

Would you mind letting me know how your visit goes? I am kind of uncertain if I should go to Hollins, or another more prestigious school. I am really interested in the creative writing program, but the Political Science, and IR programs must be beyond amazing for me to spend the money to leave California.

Thanks so much!

Oh, I know what you mean and I'd be happy to tell you how it goes :) I'll try and remember to ask about the Poli Sci and IR programs as well. I should be able to remember the Poli Sci part, though, since I'm thinking of minoring/majoring in that as well.

And I know what you mean by prestige. When I started the college search the summer before my Junior year, I completely had stars in my eyes as I hounded after the most prestigious colleges. In the end, I got over my prestige lust and applied to quite a few colleges that were not very prestigious but that I liked or had justifiable reasons for applying. But now when I actually have to make my DECISION where to go, prestige is starting to make itself a presence once again XD

Like if I am accepted into Bryn Mawr, I really have no idea how I'd be able to choose. Regardless of the scholarship. Mehhh.

But umm yes. That is all I have to say. I'll try and ask students in those areas or something to try and get a more honest answer which can also be one that can be more relevant to a student, as well. Anddd yes (:

As you both know, I'm a current Hollins student. But Poli Sci & IR are not my focuses. I'd suggest getting in touch with your admissions officer. They can truly be great resources and are wonderful to work with! They can put you in touch with students or profs in your interest areas, so you can get first-hand info.

I talked to a film prof and a theatre student when I was trying to make my decision and both really helped a lot. (I'm a Creative Writing major and Theatre & Film/Photography double minor.)

And, you are always welcome to pose questions to me. I'll answer as best I can! :-)

In terms of seeing the campus, check out the virtual tour on the Hollins webpage: http://www.hollins.edu/about/about_tour.htm

Hi TheatreChic,

I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the social life? (Dating, parties, trips into D.C., etc.)

Thanks so much!

Hi! Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. We started our Spring Semester about three weeks ago and it's been a crazy start of a semester. Crazy in a good way, that is. Theatre shows, perspective students visiting campus, that sort of stuff.

Anyway, social scene... well, it kind of depends on what you're looking for.

There are various kinds of parties on campus ... clubs sponsor educational get-togethers, the arts commmunity often throws themed-parties. If you want bigger parties than you find on campus, larger schools (like Virginia Tech) are less than an hour away. Bring a car or find a friend with one and you can party at VT every weekend, if you so choose.

Personally, I like spending most weekends on campus, as do a lot of Hollins ladies. And really, you can have some awesome, crazy times here with the amazing gals you'll meet. Whether it's playing pool and dancing around to music, or ordering pizza and watching Disney animated movies at midnight, or staying up till 5 a.m. singing along to Blues Brothers and playing "Marry, Date or Dump" -- we find stuff to do here. (All of those have really taken place in the past six months, just with me and my friends.)

And if you decide that there isn't a specific social opportunity that you really want ... jump out there and organize it! Our Dean of Students, Student Activities Coordinator and Student Government officers are all really accessible. Come up with a proposal for a party, get friends who are willing to help with publicity and such, and go talk to someone in the school administration to get approval!

If you want to see/hear about the social life at Hollins from multiple perspectives, check out the blogs kept up my students: http://blogs.chatuniversity.com/hollins/

Any more questions? Please feel free to ask!
