Hi,
I applied for UCI for
- Computer Science, B.S.
- Computer Science and Engineering, B.S.
However, in my acceptance letter, it said that my major was Data Science. Was this a mistake, or did I just not get into both programs so I was put into another one?
Thank you.
You may want to ask UCI directly.
Data science is in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences division along with CS and CSE. The change of major criteria are shown here if you do want to change major:
https://changeofmajor.uci.edu/school-of-information-and-computer-sciences/
Yeah, I didn’t even apply for data science. I don’t know why I got into that but not computer science.
Ok, so, that’s especially weird. I came here to post about my son’s similar situation. He got in to Undeclared, applied to CS.
BUT I noticed this: It seems like the only people who got in to CS were the batch a bit ago who were Regents and such. Today it seems like ALL CS people reporting on CC got in to alternate majors, but I may have missed some. Is UCI maybe doing something different this year, giving only a very tiny portion of CS applicants direct admit?
Well, that’s especially ■■■■■■.
UCI admits into the University first and then into the major. CS has a limited capacity so applicants will get their 2nd choice major, Undeclared or sometimes a similar major that has room.
@ucbalumnus listed the requirements to change majors but I would recommend if CS is your top choice major and you have a direct admit, then consider that school instead.

So, yeah, I already searched on this issue, and saw where you said this. But isn’t it odd that it seems like the only direct admits to CS were the early ones? Maybe there were some today, but I saw only these others, like my son and the OP here. And yet I didn’t see any CSE majors in this situation. Might they be doing something different?
College confidential is not a good representation of the actual # of applicants so not seeing many CS majors admitted does not mean anything. I have followed UC admissions for many years the amount of Undeclared or 2nd choice majors posting is not unusual.

Thank you and congratulations on UW!!
Ah, thank you. I was definitely super lucky, no one else from my school got in. This year especially.
If you are a Washington resident who got University of Washington direct admission to CS with in-state costs, that seems like an obvious choice to go to.

Yeah, UW is definitely a top contender. But if I got into a school like Stanford, which is highly unlikely, I would probably go there. I have around 8 schools on my list that are higher than UW which hasn’t come out yet, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Tuition isn’t really an issue for my family, I am very priviledged.

I think you bubble in the wrong box. At least you go it.
I was also confused because I was accepted with regents and honors but was given data science as my major even though I put CS
UCI student here:
I think if you really wanted to attend UCI, and you wanted to switch from undeclared into comp sci, it would be doable. There are only 4 classes required to switch into CS. They are Math 2A, Math 2B, ICS 31, and ICS 32. While those classes are restricted to CS majors, major restrictions lift March 18th, which is in 2 days, and done of those classes are currently full according to webreg (the site we use to sign up for classes) Schedule of Classes which suggests they don’t usually fill up before people from any major have a chance to sign up. Also, if you took AP Calc, you would get out of Math 2A and 2B, making it even easier to switch. So, if you don’t really care that much about attending UCI over another school, it might be smart to consider a different school where you were directly admitted into CS such as UDub, which you mentioned you got into. However if you really wanted to attend UCI, I think it absolutely will be doable to switch from Undeclared into CS.

Ok, so this is interesting. My son has already completed all of those, with As, at community college, but got in as undeclared. We’ll probably have to talk to the department for guidance on that one, I assume.
While these are the requirements, what do you know about performance in class as a factor in whether or not the department will admit you? Is it a guarantee that a student will be admitted if they complete these requirements? I have been told by others that it is not a guarantee even if you can get all of those prerequisites completed.
You would have to make sure the classes are transferrable. Not all classes are. Math 2A-2B should probably be transferrable. ICS 31-32 I am not sure about. You best bet would probably be to contact the academic advisors in the Donald Bren School of Computer Science. Here is a link: academic advising @ the bren school of information and computer sciences. They can probably tell if how you would transfer from from undeclared to CS. They can also tell you if the classes are transferrable.
