got into my safety:feel bad

I’m scared of my safety. The acceptance letter sits on my desk and taunts me. It seems to say “Your parents are going to bail out at the last second and make you go to STATE FOOTBALL SCHOOL.” :-/

I hate football.

haha… boys that hate futball?

rare

FOOOOOOOBALL!!!

One of the major drawbacks for some schools for me is lack of a D1 football team, but I’n not going to pick a school based on football.

^
we are thinking the EXACT same thing!!

I like my safeties… but I know I won’t go there because of parental pressures…

To put things into perspective: you would probably feel worse if you DIDN’T get into your safety…

I’m the opposite of Modulation.
My safety offered me a full ride, and now my dad wants me to attend. I know my safety is a pretty good school that lots of kids (ok, not CC’ers) would be happy to get into but for me I would feel like I wasted all my hard work in high school.

^ModernChem

It’s YOUR school, not your parents’.
Make your choice :)

Hell no, colleges treat applicants like **** for the most part.

^Nick017

why do you say that?

My safety’s safety is Rutgers, and even though I will get into better schools, I may end up going anyway because of financial reasons. Besides being in the honors program with other top 10% and 1350+ SATs isn’t too bad, right?

HAHAHAHA. Soooo true. It happened to my friend…

i didnt apply to any safeties b/c im arrogant and have an inflated ego that will not allow me to apply to any school rated below the top 20 of the rankings b.c i am more concerned about name than actual education.

^Hey, you also sound like someone I know. His “safety” was UChicago. And he got in.

LOL Penn2013!

My son applied to several safeties, because if he does end up not getting in to his choices, he wanted to have a choice between the schools he DID get into.

The fee was paid, that helps the school, no need to feel guilty, plus they waitlist other candidates just because some folks have applied to the school as a “safety”. So you are not taking a spot away unless you actually fill it.

Having a safety is wise, and more than one student has found out that their safety is actually their match.

Always, always, always take the high road. Unless you are obligated to attend your reach or match school by virtue of an ED admission, then preserve your safety admission because you never know what might happen down the road and things can change between now and May 1 when your final decision is due. Sometimes kids find out things about schools they didnt know and then if they have trashed a safety, they regret it. Further, you never know when you may need them again.

And fwiw, just because a safety school has students with lower SAT scores than you, doesnt mean its not academically challenging. To presume that because you have high SAT’s you wont be challenged is a fool’s errand.

And to an earlier poster who suggested people on CC have attitudes, well that is the understatement of the year. Many do, and they are often encouraged by some of the administrators/moderators here. Ignore them.

Picking a college is about you, its not about anybody else. There are thousands of kids who go to safety schools for a variety of reasons: close to home, cheaper, better merit aid, weather, culture, a specific program, or just a gut feeling its a better fit.

Interesting characters on this thread. Penn2013, nhsharvard, your experiences and choices may cause some here to think hard, but that is good. All of us can learn from the experiences of others.

Whatever you do, always, always have a backup plan. Losing a small portion of your (inflated) ego is a very small price to pay to ensure your future success.

I mean I hope that I wouldn’t have to go to my safeties, only because that would mean that I got rejected to all of my other schools. But I love the safeties I applied to. I would get over myself really quickly and love going to any of them.

My safety is the University of Texas at Austin, in the engineering honoes program so I am different from most ppl situation. UT is AMAZING and I would LOVE to go there (especially if I get a scholarship).

In fact I wanted to go to UT before I even thought about actually applying to ivies. So I am literally in a WIN-WIN situation.
