Didn't happen to me, but im curious. Is this common or uncommon?

Getting into higher ranked schools/more selective schools, but getting rejected by "lower level" schools.

it does happen, especially if the school thinks your using them as a safety

Yep, if they reject me -- that is going to my excuse! But seriously, I do know someone who was rejected by UVA but accepted at Harvard.

And yes -- I applied to UVA not as a safety but more like a back-up.

That's a bit strange. I mean, UVA is a selective school and all, but getting into Penn and not there? Sounds a bit fishy...

uva is a yield protecting pos

it happens sometimes..
my friend(at least someone i know) got into stanford and rejected from ucd

You serious? Accepted into stanford and rejected from the UC Davis? Wow...that's really...really...weird...

not really, the UCs and Stanford have pretty different philosophies on admission

It's uncommon but it happens.

well uva oos admissions is just as selective as penn so, i wouldn't really be surprised about the situation. if the person was from virginia, then thats strange.

i got rejected from my safety school...SUNY STONYBROOK... and they took a kid who has a lower gpa and sats than me and he has 1 EC...what the hell?

its simple
U get into Penn and get rejected in even a 4th tier school. Shut up and be happy...

One acceptance is a good school is good enuf

true.....................

my best friend was accepted to princeton early decision but rejected from u georgia. (he sent highly sardonic/ offensive essays to uga, mocking the university, that he thought the adcoms "wouldnt catch" because of its subtle and ornate nature--- but still haha come on 36, 2400, valedictorian).

Pirt, no offense, but mocking an innocent university who's done no harm? Your friend had no life.

Making fun of a university? That's just a waste of time.
