Got into UCSD but as undeclared?

Applied for CS in John Muir, got undeclared in Warren…

What does this mean? How does getting in as an undeclared work?

I’m pretty much in the same situation. Applied for cs. Admitted to John Muir, undeclared.

I looked it up and found out that you first have to accept the admission offer. After the first quarter, you can apply for the major of your choice and depending on your GPA, courses taken and number of vacancies in the major, you have a chance to get in later.

Yes, you are accepted into UCSD but not into your major. If you did not specify an alternate major, then you are placed as undeclared. A decision needs to be made; take your chances and see if you can get into CS or wait to see if you are accepted elsewhere as a direct admit into CS. UCSB will also accept many prospective Engineers/CS as Undeclared and then they need to try to get into their major. Some are successful and many are not. Good Luck with your decision and Congrats!!

Congrats on your acceptance! A lot of first years here are undeclared. Many choose to apply to impacted majors (the application period for CS is open each quarter, so once you take some CSE lower division courses you can decide whether to apply). You can also switch into any nonimpacted major once you SIR. Good luck with your other acceptances and decision!

So for an impacted major I’d have to take some classes then apply for it and unimpacted I can just switch in?

@BayStudent‌ Yep. Taking the classes for an impacted one doesn’t guarantee acceptance; at the end of the major application period, they rank applicants by UCSD GPA and accept as many as possible

But basically yep

Does anyone know what the bare minimum GPA they look for? Give or take? I’m trying to figure out whether it’d even be realistic. I don’t want to attend UCSD, just to find out I can’t even get into the major I want and have prepared for. At that point, I may as well just go to Davis, who did accept me as a CS major.

I don’t know if any of the CS courses I’ve taken here would even be valid at this point due to being accepted as an undeclared major (would I have to start all over from the bottom?).

I currently tutor CS at the CC i attend. So lower division CS courses to me are a non-issue to take on, but not sure if I’d like to spend my time taking all that stuff yet again, just to be possibly considered into the major, let alone accepted. I wanna get out by 2 years, would this be an unrealistic expectation at UCSD?

I think GPA varies based on students that apply to transfer. I would go to UCD because you are in the major and has better chance of graduating in 2 years.

No one here knows anything about your likelihood for admissions, and there is no bare minimum GPA. It is competitive, and they rank based on GPA so you’ll have a better shot if you have a 4.0 GPA in prerequisite courses than if you have a 3.5. But does that mean students with both GPAs won’t be accepted? Who knows. It depends on how many spots are open and who’s applying.

All you can do is contact the CS department and see if they are willing to give you more information on the chances of acceptance. CS being impacted is new, so I don’t know how much information they will have. And even if they do have stats, they may not be willing to release them.

I would go with the safe bet. Assume you won’t get into the CS major. Would you still be happy at UCSD? If the answer is no, you should go to Davis.

Thanks for the feedback, been using whatever info I can find to make a rational and reasonable decision.

Something about a scenario around the lines of:

“Oh, so you went to UCSD, huh? Wow, impressive! What did you major in?!”

“Sociology… but my real passion is COMPUTER SCIENCE!”

Yeah, doesn’t sit well with me at all (no offense to sociology majors, was just simply the first non-engineering major that came to mind).

I’ll have to look into who to contact in the CS department.
