Got into UCSD :D!! BUT TO REVELLE :(!!

UCSD has always been one of my favorite universities, and I always thought of going their more than UCI.

UCI, however, offered me their Campuswide Honors Program, while UCSD put me into Revelle College, which wasn't even one of my top choices.

I've been trying to find some advantages about going to Revelle, but so far all I've heard were
"You'll be with smart ppl" and "Ppl will think you're hard working"
So far, the cons far outweigh the pros.

ANy advice?

well if you are interested in any post graduated programs, revelle is the place to be. i got into revelle, i think because of my major… its the biggest research college in the university and it has the best rep.

if med school, law, or masters is what you want, than you will fit in at revelle. see you there?

haha thanks dude, thats good insight. so you means it’s easier to land those research opportunities?

This whole thread is incorrect. Being a student at Revelle does not mean its better for graduate/professional schools at all. There is no way an admissions committee is going to say, “Oh…lets accept this student from Revelle instead of this other student from Muir since Revelle is harder”. Being from Revelle will not let you skate by other applicants who had slightly higher numbers. Your college has nothing to do it. And no it does not make it easier to land a research position, that has come to come out of your own merit only not the college your in.

^Yeah, I don’t know where people get that from.

-.-

so why do ppl go to revelle???!!

Is this even a serious question? People go to go Revelle to go to UCSD and get a great education that prepares them for a profession. The same reason people go to the other 5 colleges. But obviously you are just looking for some sort of special treatment just for going to Revelle.

I’m a first year @ revelle college and i can honestly say that i am having the time of my life here. I’ve been to every college and checked everything out and i like revelle’s dorms the best. The way it’s structured enables you to be super social (girls&boys literally live right next to each other with a wall separated, really easy to interact. My suite and the guys right next to us have became best friends) whilst at Muir or something, the genders are separated by a huge hall.

One of the best things about Revelle is our small convenient store called Roger’s Place (more commonly called “POTS”) It’s right next to the dorms and is open till 1 am. All my sixth marshall and muir friends are jealous of me getting to just walk downstairs in my pj’s and getting something to eat late at night. Almost every night everyone from my suite and others go down for a “pots run” to get food and drinks and whatever.

Revelle also has a full sized kitchen on each floor, along with a lounge (my best friend from muir is jealous, they have no kitchen). Yes, plaza food is pretty repetitive but i’ve learned how to cook (REALLY GOOD EASY FOOD!) and that will fare will for me next year in the apartments =]

want to go off campus but don’t have a car? Revelle+sixth are the closest to all the bus stops that take you off campus to the local grocery store or mall. My sixth friend and i frequently make Pho runs 'cause there is a pho place which is only a short bus ride away.

There is also a lecture hall called York hall which is right next to revelle dorms. Many undergrad courses like the chem and physics series are here. I wake up 5 min before class and go to physics in my pj’s and come back and sleep. haha.

Since revelle was the first college built, there are a lot of facilities very close to it. The dining hall is RIGHT there (sixths’ dining hall is apparently 10 minutes away from their dorms? i’ve never been there, how the hell do they do it…) Main gym is also very close.

Okay i can go on and on about the pro’s of revelle college. Of course there are con’s too, but there are pros and cons for each and every college of UCSD. You can take your pick.

Personally it’s all about the people. If you meet *ty people youre going to have a *ty experience. If you meet awesome people youre going to have an awesome experience. Same for any university.
Sorry for the long response. I’m trying to put off studying for finals haha

They were either placed there or are ignorant in thinking: Revelle = Pre-Med School College of UCSD. Hardly is it the case that they want to “challenge” themselves.

Frosting- you revived my excitement about UCSD. :D

What are the cons of Revelle? In all honesty?

The Punany Trees, The six-quarter writing courses, the distance from more commonly used lecture halls, off the top of my mind.

There are definitely cons with every college. First is the food isn’t that great but they do have pretty good entrees most of the time and rotisserie chicken that is fairly cheap compared to everything else. Also the writing requirement, 5 quarters of it isn’t too great. I know before you could take some of the writing courses at community colleges but I think they changed that policy so you should definitely look into it. Another con is that the Revelle apartments are located on the other side of campus near Sixth college.

Whoops, it’s 5 quarters, not 6. :]

Richzz89, dont get me wrong, I’m not saying people that choose Revelle are insane, nor do I want special treatment.
I’m merely, in a hypothetical sense, just inquiring why people would choose Revelle over, say Muir. Basically I was looking for some other pros in Revelle.

And thanks Frosting. That actually makes me wanna go to UCSD more.

cons- 5 quarter writing sequence. The GE’s as a whole aren’t bad at all, except for writing, in fact i’m pretty much done with all my ge’s, i could afford to take 3 classes this quarter. I’m going to be taking 2 courses of writing @ community college this summer to lessen my load for the future.

older looking campus
the food isn’t so great.

i’m thinking really hard…and that’s all the cons i can think of right now.

Thanks, Frosting! =] Revelle doesn’t sound so dreadful afterall. Though, I am still a bit worried since I’m a chem eng major.

As for the writing requirement, 3/5 of the classes can be taken elsewhere, right?

“(sixths’ dining hall is apparently 10 minutes away from their dorms? i’ve never been there, how the hell do they do it…”

Another ■■■■■■ spewing bull **** about Sixth without knowing anything about it.

Walk through the canyon, and it literally takes 3-4 minutes to get to Foodworx from the res halls.

jpegif1,

I apologize if I came out sounding harsh. The truth is once your accepted, you are basically “forced” to enter the college your accepted to.

I think what you were asking or maybe I misinterpreted was, why do people choose to rank Revelle higher than the other 5 colleges? I think for the most part the people who decide to rank Revelle as first are often ignorant and think that Revelle will look great for getting into med school. Revelle has a reputation of having a ton of pre-med students, which I can understand because alot of Revelle’s requirements are also requirements for entrance into med school, so many people say well why not, I get rid of 2 things at once. The other reason is that other people were not as fortunate into getting into the other colleges they had ranked higher and and may have ended up getting placed into Revelle. And the final reason, some people may have just randomly ranked colleges.

Well if somebody really like the Humanities class and didn’t want to take many social sciences courses I could see why they would pick Revelle. There’s a reason.

Yah Richzz what you’ve said is probably true. I guess I didn’t assume that they’d push me back to my third choice, which was Revelle.

and KingsElite what do you mean if someone doesn’t want to take a lot of social sicence courses they’d choose Revelle?
