Got into UCSD with a 1000 SAT

if she DOES go to ucsd, do you think she will make it through a year there?

It is possible that she will do well in UCSD. Although, her SAT is low-but does that tell everything. Like her friend said, she is very studious, so she'll study and probability do well. Don't judge the book by its cover. Just because of one day test you can't assume that she'll fail in college. Brain isn't everything. If you are the type that are really smart who don't need to study and still get a good test grade-Those people create a higher drop out rate. Since they don't have dedication, patience. PLEASE RESPECT OTHERS>WE ARE ALL PEERS HERE> WE SHOULDN't put one down. WHAT WOULD SHE FEEL IF SHE READ ALL OF YOUR DISCOURAGING COMMENTs> HAVE SOME SYMPATHY
THIS IS A WASTE OF TIME!!!!!!!!

Breakdown of her SAT I score
CR: 320 M: 380 W: 300

SAT II Asian Language w/ Listening: 700
Chemistry:450
US History: 400

jesus. For a 380 math, u shd be rejected ouright. The damn SAT math is 6th grade stuff.... How the hell did she get in?? some big hook?

Maybe she really got in, but i just have a difficult time believing that she did. Something about this seems fishy. I just cant fathom with those numbers she could gain acceptance without some sort of stated learning dissability. Who knows maybe it happened, but sure seems very difficult to believe.

You must meen old sat, even though with that it seems impossible to get into UCSD. There is absolutely no way with a new sat of a 1000 she could get into any UC talk about a top tier UC like UCSD.

specially with a 380 math... that shows that her Junior school math foundations are weak

I smell a troll...

I got into SD with a 3.27 WEIGHTED GPA.... but I did get a 1970 on the SAT and so... yeah I guess anything is possible us :-)

um, i dont believe that. with all that given, you see a pre-rejected candidate. the thing is, you said all that stuff about her, the adcoms dont know that. all they see is someone who came here EIGHT YEARS ago and still did poorly. more than enough time to adapt.

with an SAT score that low do you think she even qualifies?!!

Someone's lying in this thread...

not necessarily........it could be true......maybe they found one aspect of their application good that overshadowed her sat

How the **** is it possible for someone with a below nation average (the average student in the nation is stupid), get into UCSD. I think even Merced would balk at the scores.

i forgot who it is........ someone in a different thread was talking about that. their was a statistic taken, and it proved that a student who got rejected in the morning, can be aceppted at night........maybe that happened to her.......they were in some mood and just took her in

Ok, let me clarify a little.

She is from a low-income family, like 18K for a family of 4. On her personal statement, she claimed that both of her parents never received a day of formal education, and they don’t want her to go to school since she is a girl. She also said that when she first came to U.S. she didn’t know any English (I guess this is not an excuse, since she had been here for eight years).

She is from a high school where the average score for NEW SAT is like 950, and the average GPA is like 2.5.

I don't know how she ranked the colleges for UCSD on her UC App, but her major is like biochemistry.

As for her incredibly low NEW SAT scores, this is very common at my high school. A score of 420 on the Critical Reading is above average for most UC applicants, since most of them got something like 370.

A math score of 380 is ridiculous, considering that she was enrolled in AP Statistics and Pre-calculus last year, and is enrolled in AP Calculus this year. But her math grades are always a C.
She never DREAMED that she would be admitted after rejections from UCSC, UCSB and UCLA. However, UC Davis also admits her. I highly doubt that she will make it through a year there if she chooses to go to UCSD.

By the way, at the moment, I haven’t heard anything like that her admission is rescinded due a mistake the adcom made.

I am not trying to start an argument here. All I want to say is that ANYTHING could happen in the game of college admission.

then i am guessing your a adcom officer for UC schools?...................then can you please check my chances?...
wait sorry........i thought you were not the op...........................i forgot that you were posting for your friend........forget what i said

At UCSD, the difference in points between someone w/ a 4.5 GPA & 800s on all SATS (for a total of 7700 pts) AND someone w/ a 3.0 GPA (the minimum) & 400s on all SATs (for a total of 4600) is 3100 points. other allowable points max out at 3400 which could make up the difference. so it is possible... i wonder what UCSD's cut off number was this year? if you have a 4.0 & 600 on all SAT scores (average) you start out w/ 6400 pts & only need 1300 points to match perfect scores.

hmm do you know if you could appeal and try again for a "less popular" major? ah how stupid of me to apply with bio as my major sob

your major has no impact on your admissions (unless it's impacted, which bio isn't)...

if your wondering about changing majors, you can do that anytime after you enroll.

I understand that many of you are shocked at the low gpa and test scores. What many people forget is that even though it is UCSD, they are big on life challenges and have sympathy towards underachieving schools. I think that her situation qualifies. It might not seem fair but believe it or not they would accept someone like her over someone more qualified. They like a well rounded freshman class; it is rare, but possible. And common does the SAT really judge proficiency? They do not test necessarily what you know; they test how well you can take their test. Why do you think they made the NEW SAT because the UC system wanted to do away with them altogether for their admissions decisions; they didn’t think it proved academic success. And look how the College Board messed up the scoring this year. In my opinion your friend will do great at UCSD if she is willing to try!
