Got into UCSD with a 1000 SAT

25th %ile for Cal State - Los Angeles is laughably low; 780 for combined CR and M, so with a GPA around a 3.3, maybe someone in the 700s for SATs could get in there.

royrules22-

Aye.

cy, my family income is around 20,000 with a family of 5. i'm asian and have been in the states for 7 years. i worked hard and got acceptable stats.

sorry but none of her reasons sounds convincing to me.

well, you never know....

on the old sat it would have been a 1030 for me, on the new its a 1560...and i got into both UCSD and UCLA

" cy, my family income is around 20,000 with a family of 5. i'm asian and have been in the states for 7 years. i worked hard and got acceptable stats.

It doesn't convince me either, and I have to make myself believe that by inquiring whether whether her admission has been rescinded due to a mistake. Nope, her admittance has NOT been rescinded.

For her UC essays,

1: How she struggled to learn English and got an A in her 11th English class since she got B's in her 9th Grade ESL classes and 10th Grade English classes.

2: Her involvement in the outdoor club, and how she first learned to ride a bike duirng such a trip

3: Her sobbing story. Her parents don't have any knowledge to answer her questions since she was young. On top of that, they don't let her to attend schools and how she strived to persuadeher parents. (I don't know whehter this is 100% true or ...)

BTW, she is also rejected from CAL State LA, Sonoma State, Chico State, CAL POLY Ponoma, and Long Beach.

Right. She was rejected from the higher (and lower) Cal States. How does she get into one of the higher UCs?

Just curious, has anyone heard of a school rescending a decision because of error in admission office ? How do they get around admitting they made a mistake ? Also they can't just let the student attend knowing the under-qualified student will have a hard time in class.

At a big school like a UC, sure they can.

1 applicant out of tens of thousands is fine.

as a UCSD reject, it's just hard to stomach the fact that they give students with hardships a better chance than students without, who might have worked just as hard. i've been hearing about a lot of not-so-great students getting in. but i guess on the other hand, i got into UCSB while your friend didn't.

speaking of which, is SB being really selective this year or what? i know people who got into UCD as well as UCSD, but were rejected from UCSB.

haha

i think UCSB is trying to mimic UCB, UCLA, and UCLA by rejecting perfectly good candidates

they want to be "selective"

OR they know you can get into a better school and want to leave space open shrugs

I had a 3.2 GPA (at one of the toughest high schools in california) and a 1250 SAT (on the old scale) and was admitted to UCSD for the winter term a few years ago when I applied..but was rejected from UCSB/UCLA. UCSB and UCLA were the only two UC's I would have attended and I was accepted to all the other UC's...so i'm rather certain the choosing process is like russian roulette..you might get lucky, you might get cut.

in a study ( i dont have proof its from a news article though) they looked at the applicants of the admitted and the rejected for schools like UCLA and UCB and UCSD, and most of them had no difference accept that some got in and some didnt....phew

savedbythebell---

are you going to UCSD right now?

I decided it wasn't the best fit for me. I'm at San Diego State.

i dont think its awesome bcuz its not fair to other kids who probably have same disability, hardships, but strived much harder, with sweat conviction ,blood, brain cells, and lack of sleep(shortened life span), and even more time but didnt get in , what would chuck norris say to that? and if ur school is scoring in the 1300-1400 range out of 2400 i would tell u that ur school is not cut out for the UC, maybe more compatible with the cal states, ytea the uc's are popular, but not everyone is fit for it, or they wouldnt have the twenty some odd cal states

"All men are created equal." Why shouldn't a low-income individual have the opportunity to step up the social ladder? I don't think you have the credibility to back any of this BS.

Let's just congratulate her and move on with our lives. I don't think people realize how much harder it is for a low-income student to do well in school. If you're living in the upper-middle class like me, we've got it easy. I'm not kidding.

I understand that a lower income individual should have the opportunity to step up the social ladder and there's nothing wrong with giving someone with little opportunities a leg up in admissions, but getting in UCSD with a 1000 on the new SAT? That's a baker's dozen legs up.

Personally, I agree that a 1000 score on the SAT is not acceptable for admission into UCSD, but the decision is not ours to make. It's futile to argue about it; however, I really don't appreciate the condescending remarks many have made in this thread in regards to low-income individuals.

I agree that people shouldn't make condescendingremarks about low-income individuals, and I am appalled at those who do.

However, it's a shame that this painfully obvioulsy unqualified individual edged out someone who truly deserved to attend UCSD.

I agree, it is a shame. However, there really isn't anything we can do. I'm surprised this thread was even created.

What is the purpose?

To make people that have been rejected feel worse?

The only thing that is clear to me is that cysunset isn't such a great friend. A friend wouldn't go posting this information in such a patronizing manner. It seems as if cysunset is jealous of his/her friend's acceptance when he/she should be happy.

Any chance UCSD made a mistake and confused her with someone else? I mean, Asians have a lot of common last names, it's possible someone else with her name was the real person to get admitted. Whatever, I'm not trying to be mean, congrats to her, she's really lucky.
