Got my eye on this class, chances?

Im looking to add math 118 pre calc theres 9 spots left and I have the 8th priority. It seems like a lot of people got put in math 118 that really need to take calc instead,…soo any thoughts on my chances? Thanks!

^^ Well, you can have the one they accidently put my daughter in! She had it swapped for another class today by a registrar at SOAR. She’s already taken it at our community college.

Wow. Good for your daughter. My son tried to switch out of a class he had already at a community college. He tried to take care of this before he even attended SOAR when he first saw his schedule. He tried calling and e-mailing the regitrar’s office and they would not help him at all until he met with the advisor. Well, he met with the student advisor, who told him what he already knew. Switch the general ed class he has already had at a junior college with another one. I will have him contact the registar’s office again. Did your daughter go in the Registar’s office? I did not think the Registar’s office was making any changes during SOAR.

My son found out that the Registar’s office only made a few changes to kids’ math schedules. Any other changes need to be made later. That makes sense. Otherwise, they would be overwhelmed trying to accomodate everyone.

She said someone from the Registrar’s office just happened to be there at her departmental presentation for something (didn’t quite get what she was saying.) But, either way, it worked out in her favor. Too bad they couldn’t have magically found another Econ class with a professor who has a better rating. Oh, well. I’m happy she at least got that changed. I also hope that they’re right in telling her that she doesn’t need any more math or biology to graduate. Of course, she’ll need chemistry, physiology, psych, etc. Best wishes to your son with switching his class!

I have a similar question but it’s not about math. I figured I’d ask here rather than starting a thread. I wasn’t put in a chem class because I had AP credit but I forget EVERYTHING about chem because I took it sophomore year. So I am hoping to get into chem 127 but there’s only about 7 spots left and I am 12th priority. Should I give up on hoping there will be spots? or is there a chance that I can get in?

Well, this is only the first quarter. Maybe wait until you have a better rotation or take advantage if priority reg. later?

I would 2Leashes but I need it for my major and I feel like I’d get behind if I waited because it’s the first of a series. If I can’t get the class I might just skip it and hope chem 128 isn’t too terrible. O.O

Your department actually approved and helped to make your schedule. I can’t imagine that they would not put you in the chem class if you really had to have it right now. The flow chart is just an example of the way you can take classes. My son doesn’t have chem this quarter, but I am sure he will be fine if he gets it next quarter. I guess it depends on your major. I hope you are able to get in the class you want.

the reason they didn’t give me it was because i had AP credit so they assumed i didn’t need the class =. they wanted me to take chem 128 next quarter but i don’t think i’ll be ready unless i study on my own during first quarter.

Thanks momofmv, I hope so too.

Okay. I understand now. My son didn’t take AP Chem, so he will be starting from the beginning. We thought he would get the class this first quarter, but I guess he will start in the winter quarter. I imagine it would be a good review class for you to have. Let’s hope you can get in our be waitlisted.

^^ My daughter didn’t take AP Chem, either. So, she’ll need it (as well as for her pre-reqs for grad school.) Her AP Bio score helped her, though! No more regular Biology! :)

He is done with Bio too! We were surprised how many classes/units he was given credit for. I guess because the class is all year. Very thankful that he took some AP classes!

Now my daughter wishes she had taken the AP Econ and AP Gov’t exams. Even though she got an A in the classes, she didn’t feel she retained enough to do well on the exams. She didn’t care for the classes or teachers. Might have been worth a try. Oh well.

That is too bad. I think she would have done fine. I am sure she felt too busy/overwhelmed at the end of the senior year to review. I know she had a lot going on. Now she is stuck taking Econ when my son is with a less than wonderful professor!

^^ They can commiserate together! Maybe they can form a little study group and show that professor just how much they learned! :)

Momofmv: Cal Poly awards 9 units for AP tests passed, but that is really 4 units for the actual CP class and 5 units of elective credit. Since engineers don’t get any free electives on their flowchart, the 5 elective units don’t count at all toward their degree. The year-long AP class (with a passing AP test score) gets them out of one 10-week CP course worth 4 credits. So engineers who passed several AP exams will show many more total credits than will actually count toward their degree. Either way, AP credits definately help!

Hi ralph4. It is good to see you posting again! Thank you for explaining that. I didn’t realize that the GE electives that were awarded are sort of useless for engineers. I know that he got the 4 units for the classes he took so that is good. Plus just taking the AP classes were helpful for him in many other ways. He only took 5, so he does not have a huge amount of elective units that don’t count towards his degree.
How is your son doing?

2Leashes^ It would be fun to have them meet. We met you at Open House, but your D wasn’t there. Maybe she can keep him from falling alseep. She will be just starting with her classes and he starts at 8:00am on Wed. Crazy schedules…

Momofmv: My MatE son is about to start his 4th (and last) year at CP (at least we hope it is his last). He needs to take a full load all 3 quarters, but if he can pass everything, and successfully complete a senior project by June, we will have a Cal Poly Materials Engineering graduate! Hopefully he will find a JOB! He still is happy with his choice of major and was fortunate to land an engineering internship this summer. He has enjoyed learning about engineering from the corporate side this summer.

As for son #2, he was granted his change of major to Computer Science at the end of the school year. His grades weren’t too good, but he had passed everything on the CSC flowchart for 1st year. His degree progress is ahead of the flowchart (even though he was having to take courses in his original major that don’t count for CSC) thanks to AP exams and CC courses taken before he got to CP. I think this is why (together with the grace of God) he was granted C of M with less than stellar grades. We are hoping to see increased motivation from him now that he is happy with his major. :)

Good luck to your son! CP is a great school and my son has really enjoyed MatE!
