So I'm new here and got no idea where to post this question so I thought I would start here. I'm currently a sophomore in college and I'm a Biology major and I just got my first and last C+ in college. I have a 3.5 GPA at the moment. I want to apply to medical school in my senior year as I want to be a surgeon. My question is, is this C+ doomed my chances of getting into medical school? Thanks for the help!!

Yes, absolutely no chance. You should go find a nice box to live in because it’s going to be a long, cold, hard life now that you have gotten a C.

…J/K. Seriously? 1 C isn’t a big deal. Your 3.5, however, isn’t optimal for med school admission. The average applicant has a 3.66, so you should do your best to get that up a bit ASAP.

Was the C+ in a pre-med pre-req or something unrelated? Either way apumic’s right, 1 C is not a big deal. No one thing is a dealbreaker. A series of things can be.

Trig’s not prereq, although it won’t exactly help your BCPM GPA out come application time. Just take some more math and do well, and it will strengthen your app. As long as you don’t take Calc I and end up w/ a B- (or C+ again) or something you should be fine. I’d suggest doing your best to get an A in Calc I and an A in Stats (which you’ll be well-served to take anyway).

As GS said, it’s a string of things that would hurt you. As long as you keep those less <3.0 (B- or lower) grades to an absolute minimum, you should be fine. I personally have 3 grades below a B and got into multiple highly competitive clinical Ph.D. (<10% acceptance rate) programs last year (turned them down and am applying to med school now). I did end up w/ a 3.8, though. It’s all about how you end up at the end of the game. A few minor mistakes along the way won’t ruin you. It’s when those minor mistakes (or just generally average or subpar performance the whole way) add up to a big problem (e.g., GPA <<3.5) that you’re done (or at least are going to have a very long uphill battle).

Yea I get what you’re saying apumic. Haha yea I got some work ahead of me to get me up to a 3.8. My next class is Calc 1 so I’ll shoot for an A in that. I hate math though haha. As for bluedevilmike, yea I’m taking trig in college. It’s part of Pre-Cal, kind of like pre-calc 2. My next class is Calc 1. Why do you ask?

Ahh I get what your saying. Yea I took all of this stuff in high school but this is what is required at the college I go to, which is CSUN. I’m a biology major and it requires us to take Pre-Calc 1 and 2 and Trig is Pre-Cal 2 at college level though. I’m taking Calc 1 next semester and all of my advisors tell me that that is all I need. I may take Statistics as you have told me above though.
