Got put in a single and separated from my roommate?

I applied for housing at 4pm the minute it was released. Found out yesterday I was placed in a Briscoe single, after requesting a quad. I never requested a single anywhere on my application and frankly probably can’t afford it. My roommate didn’t hear back about her housing yet. I posted in the Facebook group and a ton of people said the same thing happened to them as well. Does anyone have more information on this? Or ways to resolve it? Is it a glitch because it happened to so many people?

Call the housing office this morning.

Briscoe single. Take it. Grab it. Be thankful. You can do much worse.

I think part of the OP concern was the cost.

My incoming freshman daughter got a 2 bedroom suite style in Union Street Center. It was the 5th choice on her list. She stayed there for orientation and really liked it so she is fine with it. She also got her roommate. What’s interesting is that she filled out her housing the very second it opened and didn’t get her first couple of choices either.

That’s awesome, most everyone wants a single. Not sure why you would even be complaining.

Cost. Singles can cost much more. My one son had a quad one year and the cost difference was enormous at his school.

@ProfessorPlum168 @yourmomma OP said “probably can’t afford it.” Cost is apparently a concern.

My son also applied the moment applications opened and did not get a dorm that was on his preference list at all. Now is when he starts learning that life isn’t perfect and you don’t always get what you want! He will survive.

While cost may be a concern, with the state of IU housing a single in Briscoe is like winning the lottery. Your risk is being transferred to some dungeon without AC, electric and indoor plumbing.

Wow, I didnt apply to housing until April. I’m guessing I’m in for a very bad time.
I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but how competitive is the honors community housing? I was accepted for it but they say that doesn’t guarantee actually getting in.

On other parent social media sites, it appears numerous parents are indicating their son or daughter did not get assigned to any locations they preferred on the application. Also other parents are saying their student has not even received notice of assignment yet. Housing is going to be an uncertain and dicey proposition this year due to mold crisis fallout. Some at NSO have reported they were told there were “technical glitches” with assignments thus far. Best you can do is call Housing and find out what your options are for swapping. But be prepared, it sounds like others are doing the same. Cost seems to be a big complaint for some assigned to Union Street, despite it not being on their list,. US is the premium priced housing. A parent reported calling RPS and being told the price for US would be about $11,000 per student this year so it appears those who did not request it and cannot afford it, are concerned. No idea how RPS will handle that. Last year US was listed as $10,500- $11,000 per student. The BOT just approved a tuition increase of 2% in state and 2.5% OOS for next year I believe. There is a housing cost increase each year as well. No one seems to have the housing charges on their bursar bill just yet for next year. People need to read the IU housing contract thoroughly and understand what it legally does or does not say and what is does or does not guarantee. Freshman Housing applications at IU have traditionally been preferences only, not a guarantee.

Getting a single isn’t like winning the lottery if the family can’t afford it. The family should call housing and get it straightened out.

My daughter requested a roommate. She got separated from her roommate and her roommate was put into a single. I contacted the Housing office and the blamed the mistake on us by saying we did not put down a roommate as a preference. That is not the case. Both families met a half hour before the housing app opened just so we’d be ready and we’d be able to do the application together just so this wouldn’t happen. They refused to help us. This is complete BS considering how much money we are spending. I think there was a computer glitch that they are unwilling to accept responsibility for. I also emailed them 3 days ago and have yet to receive a response back. All we ask is to swap someone into that Single and they won’t even hear our case. I asked to talk to a Supervisor and he wouldn’t let me.

bpug612 , I’m curious where you were on Facebook posting to find similar people that have been separated from their roommates. I would be interested in seeing those posts. When I called IU, they just made me feel like we were idiots when we filled out the housing app and made mistakes, and I know that wasn’t the case. I wish they would just come forward and say they have experienced a major glitch and here are the issues. They have 2 months and try to fix as many as possible.

Housing at IU is all messed up this year because of the unexpected closing of two of the largest dorms. There is and IU Parents Facebook group and I’ve been seeing people post of their kids getting singles when they didn’t request, being put in Union when they didn’t request that. I don’t know if its so much a computer glitch as much as they just don’t have the same number of rooms available this year that they have had previously. On the flip side, I’ve also seen several people saying their kids got their first choice so it seems to be hit and miss on if people got what they wanted versus the exact opposite of what they wanted.

Dealing with iu can be a challenge. A couple of tips. Do not email. Do not email. Do not email. It’s too easy to say “no.” Best method is to deal with them in person, face to face. So if you have yet to go to orientation, make some time to go talk to them face to face. Phone would be a second choice.

Last year my kid emailed about changing rooms after his buddies roommate left. He got the obligatory “no we can’t do that.” Once he went to the office, it was all worked out for him. Good luck.
