Hey,
I just entered my freshman year at a BS/MD program. I remember last year around this time, I was SO confused about the whole BS/MD application process and what was going on, and I needed all the help I could get.
If you have any questions about how things work, I'll try to answer things as best I can.
Lemme know :)

Which BS/MD programs were you accepted to and which one did you eventually enroll in? Thanks for the help! :)

Which ones are the easiest to get into, for lets say 2200 SAT, and low 700’s SAT II’s?

^It’s not always about scores you know.

There are no easy ones to get into. And since some of them are getting cancelled, it is harder with each year. SAT II are probably of least concern in regard to stat. portion of your application. GPA / class rank (even when HS does not rank, college will still know your rank) are very important. EC’s, essays, interviews also.

It’s not only about the scores but it’s always about the scores.*

…? Please explain?

^ha, yea, i dont quite understand that. Although, on most apps, including the common app, on the counselor’s form there is a line that requires the highest GPA at your school-so maybe this is what he’s talking about?

heey ditto i’m a frosh in a ba/md program this year as well, and i too remember what it felt like to have absolutely NO ONE to ask for help sooo if you need anything just ask. yep. :)

^ Thanks! Mind answering the question I posted earlier?

ok!
I got into:
Wayne State Medstart
University of Cincinnati DAP
Ohio State University MAP
Michigan State University BS/DO

yeah, it was really important for me to stay in the midwest, so I only applied to programs in Michigan and Ohio.
Attending: OSU MAP!!

^ Would you mind posting your stats? GPA, ACT/SAT, ECs, Leadership Roles, Essays, Interview, Race, etc?

I think that Miami DAP means that even if your high school doesn’t rank, colleges are sent a “high school profile” which has all the stats about your high school, including avg. ACT scores, GPA, number of APs taken, etc. From there, they can see what the demographic of your hs is like, and where you stand amongst the others.

ACTTester, I’d rather not do it on the board, please message me.

Overmyhead, I think that which programs are “easiest to get into” depends on your home state. For example, I know that NEOUCOM is RELATIVELY not that hard to get into if you live in Ohio, but if you’re out of state, it’s nearly impossible. From what I’ve heard, NEOUCOM (for ohio res), Penn State/Jefferson Med College, and UMKC are some of the less selective ones. I think.

Also, engineerhead is totally correct that it is and is not about the scores. Basically it’s a two step process. The first step is the application, and they will immediately weed out everyone who has low scores/GPA. Next, they will weed out anyone who doesn’t have good medical and well-rounded extracurriculars. Next, anyone with unconvincing or poorly written essay/rec letters is tossed. From the remaining apps, they will choose whom to call for interview.

The second step the interview, for which you will be chosen if your application makes the aforementioned cut. At this point, your scores and stuff don’t matter anymore. Interview is all about your personality and how convincingly and genuinely you can present your case. At the interview, you cannot get intimidated because you will meet people 39023x smarter and more accomplished than yourself. But here, you can look around and get a good feel for the college and med school.

So basically, you need to have the full package: great application + personality.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this humongous post!

Thanks, I did. :)

Dee37, congrats! OSU MAP is cancelled for this year, Cinci DAP has shrunk from 50 spots to ???

"(even when HS does not rank, college will still know your rank)
…? Please explain? "

-Very easyly. they do not take HS rank anyway, they re-calculate it. They use student’s GPA and HS class profile. I have asked this question at some Honors college info session. Most Honors programs require certain rank along with other min. stats. D.'s school did not rank. More so, sometime it is impossible to get top 2%. For example what if class is only 33 kids. The #1 kid is making close to top 3%.

What are some that have less focus on GPA? I have decent SAT (2100), Good sat 2’s (760,800), Stellar AP scores (5 bio, 5 psych, 5 stat), good EC’s, and a good essay. Can i still get in with my 3.5 unweighted?

chocolatecricket: Most of the top programs have profiles of 2250+ and 3.8-4.0 GPAs. AP scores usually don’t matter much for admission purposes. Depending on where you live, there definitely might be some in-state programs that are worth a shot, but I would definitely diversify if I were you and look for schools that have good general pre-med programs as well.
