Got questions about UNC merit scholarships?

They don’t send anything out about scholarships until after decisions go out.

UNCgal,Thank you for your kindness. My son got invitation to Scholarship day.I am kind of worried because his personality is quiet, worried that he will mess up that day, do you have any suggestion for him? His stats: gpa 5.1, ACT:33, in state. If anybody has any suggestion, please share your thoughts. Thanks!

UNC is incredibly stingy with scholarships. However, interestingly, last year they sent out a survey to students who rejected them asking what level of money would have made them change their minds. The survey was subtle, in that they showed you a level of money and you clicked yes or no and if you clicked no, then they came back and showed you a higher level and had you click yes or no until you had reached that theoretically magical figure that would have convinced you to come.

NCMOM2012, did your son receive his letter in the mail? Or did he find out that he was offered the scholarship invitation along with his online decision?

He got the acceptance letter in the mail first then the same afternoon, he got the email.

So did his offer come with the letter? I am OOS and so far I have only viewed my online decision. When he logs onto his MyUNC Portal, does he see his invitation there too, or only in the physical letter?

There is an event link for Scholarship Day on the portal page.

I’m curious if anyone knows if Morehead Cain Finalists are eligible for Scholarship day. I’ve been named an OOS Finalist and invited to the Morehead Finalist weekend in February. However, since I have no guarantee of getting the scholarship I was wondering if other merit money was available. I haven’t heard anything about Scholarship Day and I recieved my acceptance letter Friday and the nine options letter yesterday.

I’m an in-state finalist for the Morehead and received my scholarship day invite and 9 options letters yesterday, so I’m pretty sure you can go for both. You probably forfeit the scholarship day scholarships or something if you get the Morehead- not exactly sure since Morehead is not directly from the university.

Yes, I’m guessing that you would just forfeit anything you get from UNC if you get the Morehead. One of my friends was a finalist but did not get it, but I’m pretty sure she ended up getting a pretty good scholarship from Scholarship Day.

Yes, you can be invited to both days, however if you receive a Morehead or a Robertson, you forfeit the UNC merit scholarship (those other scholarships come with summer opportunities so they are the better offer, after all).

NCMOM2012 - Don’t worry about your son, he will be fine! I’m pretty quiet and everything turned out fine here. How does he interact in a classroom situation? As long as he makes a comment or two in the discussion to show how he thinks and works in a collegiate setting, he will be fine. Also, there is a writing component to scholarship day which gives even the most quiet or hesitant students an opportunity to speak their mind and be heard by the committee. My advise is for him just to try and relax, be polite, and be himself. Congratulations on the scholarship day invite!

For those of us who have been accepted OOS, but have heard nothing about merit dollars or scholarships - what is the typical time frame for when these awards or invitations would be sent?

Still waiting for one Mister K. My daughter got in OOS last year and was invited into honors college in February. I believe the choice of special programs came late February and they sent her a book by someone at UNC. Alumni also sent her personal letters. She received 3 other major scholarship from schools but nothing from UNC. She did the survey mentioned above about what amount was needed. Maybe that will help this years class.
Good Luck!

UNCgal–Thank you for your reply. My son sometimes participate class discussions, not a lot. His class has 25 students. He tends to be a little better when it’s in smaller group setting. Do you get feedback on your essay? So, how he does on Scholarship Day decides if he gets any scholarship and what type of scholarships he will get? Thanks again for your time.

For the Pogue, since only 15 I heard are nominated from OOS, do they pick at least one from that pool or pick some from the total 75 IS and OOS? Better rephrased, for the Pogue scholarship does at least one winner have to be from OOS?

They said if it wasn’t in the letter there is no merit aid.

orcaaa…do you mean the acceptance letter or the special programs letter?

The discussions groups are pretty small so I would not worry. Also just to let you all know I have heard that there will be two scholars days this year - the second one in late March.

acceptance letter

We’ll give it a few weeks before we ask about merit aid. Sometimes these things take time, but perhaps we don’t have what they’re looking for. We’re OOS, received the acceptance and the “9 special possibilities” letter - but no mention of merit dollars.
