Got Questions, Ask Away.

I am a freshmen living in Santa Catalina, majoring in Chemical Engineering.
Last year, I had people help me out by answering mine and other freshmen's questions, so I would like to do the same. Ask about anything: greek life, partying, studying, food, which dorm to pick, etc. Don't hesistate to ask. And congrats to the class of 2014 and 2012. Be prepared for an amazing year here at UCSB. :)

How far is Santa Catilina from DP, as opposed to the shorties??

Santa Catalina is around 0.5 miles away from DP.
shorties ? idk what they are.

The three shorties… like santa cruz, anacapa, and santa rosa…

what was your GPA and SAT before being accepted?

hi! im wondering how hard it is to find a job at UCSB outside of the campus… and not through work study either. THanks :)

Anacapa, Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz are on the other side of campus so it is at-least 1 mile from DP.

my SAT score was 1920, GPA : 3.75 weighted(3.86 UC GPA). SAT II : math II - 780, chem - 770, physics - 720, us history - 670 or 680.

Outside of campus meaning at KMART, Free birds , or Best Buy ? hmm i would say its pretty difficult.

Do you ever hear complains about cs classes being too hard?

actually Mancini, yea some difficult CS classes are CS40,and CS24.

If you’re in the L&S college, do u still take class in the CoE ?

In the PoliSci or Philosophy majors, how hard is it to get a 3.7+?

Obviously it depends how much you put in, but what is the general difficulty of the those majors and school in general

@Mancini : i heard its possible more the other way around. CoE kids taking classes in L&S, not L&S taking classes in CoE.

@cowman809 : i am sure polisci and philosophy are hard majors, polisci is probably harder than phil IMO, cause there are more pre-reqs for upper div polisci than upper div phil.

UCSB is a pretty challenging school. If you worked hard during HS, and continue to have the same work ethic, then i am sure you’ll do just as well. :)

are there certain classes you have to take no matter what? For example I have AP exams coming soon. If i pass them with 4s do I still have to take english and history. If I fail do I have to take them even if im majoring a different subject?

yes, they are called GEs but i am sure with enough AP credits/ Junior college credits, you can pass most of them. For example if you get a 5 on AP ENG lang/lit you don’t have to take the 3 basic writing courses (writ 1, writ 2 and writ 50)

How much of an issue is the distance of Santa Catalina to the campus?

And I really like the idea of Santa Catalina, but I’m not a HUGE partier and I don’t like to drink or anything. Will that be an issue?

Santa Catalina is about 1.5 miles away from campus.
Lesson in life : DO NOT TAKE AN 8 AM CLASS IF YOU LIVE IN SANTA CATALINA

naw, it won’t be an issue. there are the people who drink like alcoholics and others who don’t, so you don’t have to drink unless you want to.

How’s the music scene? What if I was looking to join a band - how easy would it be?

what kind of score should i be aiming for on SAT 2s?

So wait… are you implying that the distance with Santa Catalina is an issue… or not?

chrisofar, it depends. Some people have an issue with it, but most don’t mind or have gotten used to it. You can’t practically walk the distance, so plan on having a bike (or maybe a skateboard/longboard, though it might still be quite a trip) or taking the bus every day. There is a shuttle that goes back and forth from campus to Santa Catalina every half hour or so.
