Got questions for 2020 Barnard Student?

Use this thread to ask questions! I’m excited to answer them (yes summer is boring).

I’m Barnard 2020 and looooove this place.

Do you take any classes at Columbia? If so, how do the classes differ in terms of size and difficulty? Also, how do I express more interest in Barnard? I wasn’t able to apply to Barnard Bound because of a sudden financial difficulty, but I have taken an unofficial tour led by my cousin (LOL). I know that contacting your admission rep. is a great way to reach out, but what do I contact them with? Questions I have about the school?

Hello! I was wondering what your experience at Barnard has been like so far? And I was also wondering if you know what the political science and history programs at Barnard are like?

I take a the roughly the same number of classes at Barnard and at Columbia. The class directory is the same so in 98% of the cases it does not matter which in school you are taking the class. Also some classes are only offered at Barnard and some only at Columbia so. For the interest, I think showing you truly get Barnard’s uniqueness is very important. Watch all the videos, read the whole website, just be familiar with the school. If you have quesions you can send to askastudent@barnard.edu and a student will answer it!

I looove Barnard. My first year was so fun but really challenging. Columbia/Barnard is really just all the most intelligent kids in high school all together so it is obviously very hard. I’m actually a poli sci major! The departments, both at CU and at Barnard, are both great and I’ve taken some really good classes. It is a pretty small major (only 10 classes) so you get a lot of freedom, which is always fun.

That’s awesome! I hope you don’t mind me asking, but was Barnard a reach school for you? I only ask because my chances of getting in seem very slim with my low SAT scores. Do you have any advice when it comes to getting into Barnard? How can I set myself apart from other applicants?

Same here! I know that the political science department is amazing at Barnard – also very competitive. I’m applying ED and am planning on studying political science and English.

I was also wondering if you did an interview? If so, how did it go? Did you bring a resume for your interviewer? Also, I have written articles for my school newspaper that my journalism teacher loved. Our school paper has won a few awards, so I was wondering if I should send in at least one of the articles to showcase my writing? I know that Barnard really looks at the essays and I want to emphasize my strengths in writing.
