Hey guys I just got rejected ED from my dream school, and am kind of panicking about not getting into any colleges. So please chance me at UT Austin! Specifically Cockrell
I'm an Indian male barely outside top 10%, which is what's freaking me out the most. I got 2270 on my second sitting of SAT (760 W, 790 M, 720 CR), 34 on only sitting of ACT (36 W, 35 M, 33 R, 32 S). I'm in both NHS and Natonal French Honor Society. I've gotten 5s on AP calc AB and Eng Lang, 4 on Chemistry and US history. I have about 220 hours of volunteering at a local hospital, and am the VP of our schools French Club. I've researched with professors at 2 different labs at UT over the past 2 summers. I competed at the state level in Science Olympiad 2 years in a row. Sorry about the lack of formatting, I typed this on my phone but please chance me! And thanks a ton for reading and helping!

GPA?

Which major at Cockrell? You have pretty good connections to working at UT, great EC, pretty good scores too! The only thing lacking is rank, but everything else might make up for that.

I’m applying to biomedical engineering at UT, and have a 4.32 weighted GPA and 3.8 unweighted. I know that I have everything except rank going for me, but I’m worried about whether the rank is enough to get me denied. I don’t think it is, but I wanted opinions from others. I’m ranked ~65/550.

Also if it means anything, I’m taking 7 AP classes this year.

The one word that comes to mind when I think about UT is “arbitrary”. This is directed toward admitting students either not in the top 7%, or from private schools that don’t rank.

I know several kids who were accepted into schools like: Rice, Standford, Wash U, UC Berkeley, Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest, etc that either were rejected out right by UT or were offered the cap program. I also know kids who were ranked outside of the top 25%, and who had mediocre test scores that got in. UT admissions makes no sense to me.

Have you spoken to your UT admissions counselor? Have you toured the school, met with the honors department, or attended a "preview’ day? A phone call or personal visit with your UT admission counselor might help. Ask if you can provide any additional or supplemental information. If you have not done so already, you may also want to meet with someone from the honors department. I know there are several programs LAH, Plan II, etc. Make sure he/she knows if accepted you will attend. Some may tell you visiting or contacting your UT admissions counselor won’t help, but it also can’t hurt.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply! I’ve heard similar things about UT’s arbitrary decisions and it’s what made me nervous enough to make this thread. I applied to Engineering Honors but haven’t spoken to anyone at UT about it. I was hoping that me having worked on campus 2 summers in a row would be very helpful in getting me in. Since I was rejected ED from duke, I definitely will attend UT if I get in. Out of what you have told me, I have not contacted an admissions counselor, but I will look into it thank you.

@spurs33 - I wouldn’t worry about it, you have a fantastic shot.

Really? Even though I’m not top 10%? Thank you!

I don’t think so. DId you apply to A&M as well? Also consider cap if UT Austin is really where you want to go. My nephews were both denited by UT Ausitin with numbers similar to yours, one also interested in engineering. One goes to A&M and the other is at a competitive private . Miss that 10% and it’s a tough go, and engineering is one of the most competitive programs.

Have you considered other engineering schools? I also applied to Cockrell, look into U of Michigan and U of Minnesota

Yeah! I’m applying to a lot of other schools, Michigan is on the list as well as Purdue, Vandy, Emory, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech
