I applied to the Earth and Planetary Science major with a Marine Science specialization. I am going to complete the IGETC by the end of this spring semester. All my major pre-reqs will be completed by during this semester as well. My overall GPA is 3.0 but my major GPA is higher than that (should be around 3.3 or 3.4, excluding IGETC.) I'm curious about whether my overall GPA or my major GPA is important.

I found out UCB rejected me a while ago and I'm really bummed out, so I'm trying to figure out the pinpoint cause of their decision. I will immediately appeal if I find out they made some sort of mistake on my application.

It may be your overall GPA. Berkeley has a competitive pool of applicants with high GPAs. I would recommend you calling them and asking them yourself to hear what they have to say.

Yeah, I plan to ask them soon. Ugh, stupid weekends.

I doubt Berkeley is like UCLA where you can just call and find out the reason why you were rejected. They make it clear that they don’t want people calling them for this reason.

But also, you did just apply to the #1 public school in the nation…you haven’t finished your prereqs, your IGETC…and your GPA is way below average. Do you really think Cal made a mistake?

My pre-reqs and IGETC will be finished in time by the end of this Spring 2011 semester, so I am pretty sure I am on the right track. I am aware that I applied to an excellent university and their requirements are strict. I guess I thought they would also accept several students with lower GPAs since I heard that was possible as well.

I just really want to know why I got rejected. I got rejected from UCLA as well but I didn’t care much for it. I feel that if I find out what happened, I’ll be at peace with UCB’s decision.

this might help you. i got rejected too from Cal as mechanical engineering. i had 3.86gpa and 4.00major gpa. i finished all the pre-reqs for Cal last semester, but was missing some recommended classes that i could not find in socal colleges. i dont blame them. im sure they made the right decision. and im actually happy that ill have relatively less pressure in academics at UCLA compare to Cal.

Sorry but its your gpa… 3.0 overall and you want to go to #1 public school in the nation and you have a gpa that UCR admits?

Your overall is most important… they dont want a student that gets As in calculus but a C in music appreciation… (just an example)

Haha I had a feeling people would try and knock some sense into me. Applying with a GPA of 3.0 to UCB does seem ridiculous.

@passwordis: Wow, that’s impressive. I’m surprised they would reject you. But as long as you’re satisfied with the other UCs you got accepted to, that’s great.

You’re lucky that there’s TAG to save you or else you wouldnt even be going to a UC…

how did you find out if Cal rejected you earlier?

By earlier I meant I found out earlier today.

UCLA and Berkeley are pre-req Nazis.

cal isn’t

i know a guy who got accepted to Haas with only 2/5 major prerequisites done and was doing the other 3 this spring.

i had 4/5 with all As and i am doing the last one right now and i got rejected.

You have a 3.0 and your wondering why Cal rejected you?..There are people with 4.0 getting rejected from Cal, if you ask me you should of been expecting a rejection.

To add twistnswifs point of Cal rejecting 4.0 students, even UCLA rejects students with 4.0’s as well. Keep in mind that you are applying to one of the most competitive UC’s for admission.

Of course UCLA is the other one.

Bashunm100- How long did it take you to write your personal statement and how many drafts did you do? I am asking because both UCLA and Cal use the personal statement as part of their review process for applicants.

… seriously? Haha unless you have TAG you wouldn’t make it into the top three UCs with that GPA.

I agree that applying with a 3.0 is pretty much a waste of time to schools like UCB and UCLA. Long story short, I was in the TAP program for UCB and had all my classes set for Fall 2011 and Spring 2012. After the Fall 2011 semester, my overall GPA dropped from a 3.3 to a 3.0. I didn’t try hard enough even though I had to take four science classes during that semester to finish my pre-reqs in time. I probably would have had much higher chances of getting in if I aced all the science classes instead of barely passing them. I feel defeated after not being able to handle such a heavy workload.

After their decision, I feel kind of broken at this point. I got into a few other schools through TAG but UCB was the main school I wanted to go to.

@Pinoiako: I spent as much time throughout the previous fall semester working on my personal statement. I had about 3 or 4 drafts before sending in my final draft.

Bashum100-what UC did you get accepted to?
Grimes99 is correct, UCLA, Berkeley and UCSD are being more competitive for admission now for transfer students.

UCSD has their tag requirements at a 3.5 now.

I got accepted to UCSC, Riverside, Irvine, and UCSD.

I heard about the TAG requirement thing at UCSD. That really sucks for upcoming UCSD transfers next year.

I mean you said it yourself, you didn’t put in the work and you couldn’t handle the workload at community college. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have applied, but it is silly that you’d be surprised by a rejection. Believe me, Cal probably did you a favor by rejecting you… If you can’t handle the workload at cc… then you would be beyond screwed at berk.
