Not gonna lie, UMCP would look better but UMBC is a good school too. Get good grades and getting into a good med school wont be too difficult.
Why would you not apply early action if you liked UMCP so much…?

Um…I did, thats how I know I got rejected…

Speaking of, What are the chances that I can transfer to umd from umbc with 3.0+?

The higher your GPA at UMBC, the better your chances at transfering. We have seen in-state students transfer with GPAs of 3.0 from CC or other colleges. However, as I’m sure you already know, if you are eyeing Medical School, your GPA should be as close to 4.0 as possible.

UMBC attracts some of the brightest kids from our county. It’s reputation continues to get better and if you go there and do not like it, transferring is an option if you have done well in your classes.

[USM Board of Regents Approves Bold Collaboration between UMD and UMB :: University Communications Newsdesk, University of Maryland](http://www.newsdesk.umd.edu/uniini/release.cfm?ArticleID=2633)

@apm,
They turned down the merger plan I think that would have been the better course. I think UMB was afraid that in an outright merger, the Baltimore campus would become a stepchild over time. So the story you posted is a “half way” step.

Relatively low GPA

Data from U Maryland:
73% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
14% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
8% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
3% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24

That’s too bad. The story was dated 3/1, and at the top of UMD’s home page :/

Kei…is that for incoming freshman? It seems that for transfer students they look almost exclusively at post-high school GPA. I think they give (especially MD residents) the benefit of the doubt that whatever they were thinking in h.s. (causing low GPA or test scores) , they’ve matured and are ready to handle college, if they can pull a decent GPA in CC or another college.

UMB is University of Maryland Baltimore not UMBC, which is University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

UMB is the graduate school in Baltimore. UMB didn’t want the merge because they don’t want to have to share their research money with the UMCP. There is no advantage to the graduate school(medicine, pharmacy, law) to support UMCP. The state is just trying to shift its responsibility.

Guys thanks so much for the information so far i appreciated so much, I have a second question can i take 12+ credits at CC this summer and apply as spring tranfers student?

if I were you I would seriously consider UMBC and forget College Park. We have been so impressed with everything about UMBC – especially for STEM majors. If you like being around smart, academic, really nice kids – try UMBC!

…looking around for the “Like” button…

You should probably do your first year at CC and transfer to Maryland next fall.

Guys a year at UMBC>CC…for so many reasons, however umbc overall is just not good enough…Sorry. The big thing that bothers me at umbc is the atmosphere which would sophisticate the life out of me…

I’m am quite pleased about what I’ve read about UMBC and its STEM departments. Lake Jr. has been admitted to the class of 2016 and I am hoping that UMBC will be high on his list of options, even though we are OSS and our flagship is very competitive nationally. I just think he’ll get more attention and motivation and enjoy UMBC more than the engineering program at our flagship or at its main local rival, which also is quite strong in engineering but has a weed 'em out, 'stamp ‘em out’ and factory floor approach to engineering education.

Thank you for that but I’m leaning towards biology and life sciences
